We had the good fortune of connecting with Shobie Spear and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shobie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My entire life I have been exposed to self employed business owners. I grew up in a generational construction family; my grandfather, my father, both of my brothers and my father-in-law were all general contractors. To say the least it runs in my blood. As I got older and had the opportunity to develop my skills and experience, through it all it made me understand the in’s and out’s of the construction business. I realized that when you run your own small business you have an opportunity not only to own and operate a business but to provide opportunity for everyone who works with or for you. It allowed me to build a business that reflected my character and values rather than trying to find a company to work for that may or may not reflect those same ideals. Starting my own business allowed me to focus directly on God, family, clients and on the development of a team that reflected these same values.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started working in our family construction business very young. I can remember as a five year old going to job sites to clean up trash and “helping”. The summer I turned 14 we built a house and I was able to be a part of construction from the site prep and foundation all the way through plumbing, electrical and finish work. I worked full time with this house and it allowed me to see residential construction from beginning to end and understand every piece down to the more nuanced components of timing and specialty work. I genuinely learned that summer that if you just pay attention people are willing to teach you and you can learn far beyond what you thought. In my early 20’s I worked in custom woodworking shops, flooring materials warehousing and in flooring project management.I loved this role because I was dedicated to fine finish work for years and developed an eye for the quality I now expect in the fine finish homes we build now. As I developed my skills I started working exclusively in residential construction in 2014. I worked with my father-in-law and in that time he taught me that consistent relationships with subcontractors are imperative to the success of a business. As I began to work with other contractors, homeowners and clients everything started to point to ownership. All of this led to Tyler and I creating Colorado Custom Built into one of the premiere custom home builders in El Paso and Teller counties. When it comes to our brand and story I want people to know that it is rooted in deep ongoing learning with generations to back the knowledge and expertise to back it up. I would love people to know that our brand believes in people’s dreams of their new homes and making their old ones new too with supporting the amazing people that work with us and for us to make that dream come true.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As for my Colorado Springs itinerary, I would likely choose The Omelette Parlor for an excellent breakfast omelet, continue to Pine Creek Golf course to play 18 holes and take in the breathtaking views of Colorado Springs. I would then recommend Prime 25 steakhouse for appetizers and a meal. Their steaks are absolutely unreal and cooked to perfection. I would finish the evening off with a nightcap at Axe and Oak Whiskey House with a smoked tobacco old fashion.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
After much thought and consideration of all the people who have encouraged, supported and mentored me I realized that there are three key components here…
First, my faith… I have always believed that the most important thing in life is how your faith impacts yourself and those around you. In my pursuit to build a faith that is actually reflected in the real world I realized that one of the ways to do that was build something that not only reflected these ideals but could build an environment that would foster growth. My faith has always been a core tenant of my life… Mathew 7:24-27 Jesus talks about building your house on a rock. Not only is it imperative to live your life on things that are solid but it is also crucial to reflect that ideal in the way you build and create in business, family and life.
Second, my wife Natalie. In 12 years of marriage she has not once waived her encouragement and support. She is a CONSTANT source of support, encouragement and a safe place to brainstorm on the successes and failures of building a business. Together we have built a life built on Jesus and have created a home including three beautiful children. She is my closest friend, confidant, and support.
Lastly, my business partner Tyler Scheer is a great example. After many years of friendship, we had the opportunity to work alongside one another in a small construction company years ago. As we worked together Tyler would often remark on the skills that we possessed as a team… He had construction experience and business experience as he had most recently owned and operated a Cafe in Delray Beach Florida. As we worked together Tyler would often encourage me to grow my skills both in the field as a Superintendent and in the office as a Project Manager. Tylers constant encouragement and ability to see the best of my skills in that season created the perfect springboard into building a partnership and to create Colorado Custom Built.
