Meet Steven Smith | Tattoo Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was introduced into tattooing at a young age leading to growing up in the industry. My dad tattoos as well, and that’s how I got into it. I did my first tattoo at 10 years old. Constantly spending time in the shop trying to further my craft. Being around so many phenomenal artist. It all has helped me, with gaining so much knowledge from multiple people and environments. A lot of people assume I’m older after seeing my work and the talent I have. My past has made me into the thriving artist I am today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is my attention to detail and being able to a mixed media of art. I’m not known for one style. I can do black and grey, color, realism, traditional etc. I get excited about being able to work with so many different walks of life. Getting close and personal with my clientele, making lots of friendships, laughs and even tears. Being something that people look forward to is so rewarding. And to give someone something that will last a lifetime is priceless. I enjoy art and to be able to do it everyday for a living is incredible. Not to many do what they love. And get paid for it!
I have put countless amount of hours into my craft. I’m normally the first one in, last one out of the tattoo shop. It was hard, I lost out on a lot of valuable time with family and what not to get where I am. I made tattooing my life and everything else came to eventually evolve around it. A lot of sacrifices, hard times, and constant work! You don’t get a break as a tattoo artist. I can’t just scroll down social media without being tagged, having messages to go through. Posting content to be seen consistently. I go out to eat and advertise myself, complementing tattoos and handing out business cards. Great art speaks for itself, but you have to get your name out to get appointments. dedication and loyalty to the craft has got me to overcome these challenges. Now I can post I have availability and book almost immediately. I have people travel across the US to get tattooed by me.
I have definitely learned to take time to rest, for my family and most importantly for myself. I have to take care of myself in order to keep doing this as long as I can. I don’t know what I’d do without this career.
I want everyone to know, all skin is welcome, come have a great time, get phenomenal art and build relationships!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First off, we would have to hit my favorite dispensary to get some party gifts. A great burger over at Cherry Cricket in cherry creek. There are so many things to do like hiking beautiful trails, hitting up elitch gardens, go kart racing, seeing a movie, shopping etc. Also there are endless amounts of great food to eat. My favorite food is breakfast and places are like the original pancake house, Sam’s 3, three little griddles. And of course at some point, they’d have to come check out my shop and get tattooed! Something to remember the trip forever

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The most important shout out would be to my wife, she really pushed for me to take it serious. She took control of everything so I can focus on my passion that led into something amazing. There are a few tattoo artist that have really helped me get to where I am today. Dwayne Dixon has probably been my greatest mentor. And RX tattoo care for believing, sponsoring and supporting me!
