We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Titelbaum and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adam, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I decided to start a business growing, selling and delivering microgreens in order to capitalize on my 17 years of professional cultivation/farming and my MBA along with prior business experience. My goal is to provide fresh, healthy, locally grown microgreens to improve people’s health.

What should our readers know about your business?
My urban, indoor farm, Field of Microgreens, is in Broomfield, CO, where I grow, sell and deliver over 25 varieties of microgreens to caterers, restaurants, grocery stores, smoothie bars and individuals. I grow to order and most of my microgreens are harvested in 10-14 days. Once harvested, the microgreens are delivered to customers all along the front range from Highlands Ranch up to Fort Collins and everywhere in between in the Denver and Boulder area. For those who don’t know, microgreens are edible vegetables and herbs harvested at the earliest stage of development, after the sprouting stage, when they are in their most nutritious and freshest state. Microgreens intensify flavor, texture and add interest to any dish. You can enjoy microgreens in salads, soups, smoothies, sandwiches or entrees. I’ve found that restaurants, caterers and grocery stores have difficulty maintaining a regular supply of a fresh microgreens on their shelves, and many suppliers only provide limited offerings. I am able to regularly supply any of the 25 different microgreens to my customers at a reasonable cost, reliably. I love speaking with people about microgreens and how they boost your immune system, help with weight loss, lowers inflammation and actually tastes great at the same time. Many are unaware of how many varieties there are of microgreens and how delicious and beautiful they are like beet, cantaloupe, bi-color amaranth, radish and so many more. I started my career by learning to grow tomatoes with my grandmothers and mother a young child. For the last 17 years, I was a professional cannabis cultivator, running hemp farms and indoor cannabis facilities. I have now returned to my roots, growing food and it is incredibly gratifying to bring healthy, fresh, delicious and nutritious food to my fellow citizens plates, here in Colorado. I use non-GMO seeds whenever possible and I use organic practices and zero pesticides in my farming. I’m fully sustainable, as after I harvest my flats, I bring what’s left to the local prairie dog colonies where they feast on the left over shoots and leaves. I have a B.A. from CU, Boulder in Anthropology and Political Science and I have an MBA from Colorado State University and I started this business from scratch with my wife’s help and it’s been months of hard work and long hours and things are beginning to take off. I make cold calls daily, selling my products and myself, meeting with business owners, delivering samples and discussing uses and strategies. It has not been easy, as I had to plan and design my indoor farm, procure equipment, set up the farm, seeding/sowing area, packaging station, selecting and purchasing seeds, growing trials, setting up a website, business strategy, marketing plan and constant hustling. After working with and leading teams for the past 11+ years, I’m back to working mostly on my own, as I did when I started out as a medical marijuana caregiver, taking care of 35 patients before there were dispensaries. It isn’t easy, but I’m committed to growing (every day!) this business and getting my fresh, organic microgreens onto as many peoples’ plates as possible, so they can enjoy them and lead healthier lives. I’m still in the early stages, as I just started in March, so I’m building the business everyday and hopefully Field of Microgreens will be on store shelves, restaurants, caterers and smoothie bars across Colorado before long. I’ve learned to be patient, diligent and creative and how much I love interacting with people in the food industry here. Field of Microgreens is a company built on decades of passion working with plants and bringing bountiful, nutritious, healthy harvests to people’s plates across Colorado, grown to order just for you, by visiting our website at www.fieldofmicrogreens.com or look for us in grocery stores.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my best friend, Josh comes to visit, we always go disc golfing at the many free disc golf courses throughout Colorado’s front range and into the mountains. It’s a great way to be outside in the gorgeous surroundings, walking, talking, laughing and throwing discs trying to improve our scores and techniques. We stop at one of the many independent coffee shops like The Trident in Boulder or ZOES coffee in Westminster and relax, chat and people watch. Depending on the time of year we might go to a CU football or basketball game, walk through CU’s beautiful campus, the Pearl Street Mall and hike in Chautauqua park by the majestic Boulder Flat Irons. Then we’d spend a couple of days in Denver checking out the many museums like the Denver Art Museum and Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Botanic Gardens, Coors Field, walking downtown and always taking in the phenomenal mountain views all the while. There are so many dining experiences to be had, whether it’s from the plethora of food trucks, cafes or restaurants, dining inside or outside or perhaps a picnic in a serene spot with mountain scenery. Of course no visit would be complete without a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which in my view is one of the best music venues, along with the Mishawaka Amphitheater up the Poudre Canyon. We’d spend a day in Fort Collins, where I raised my family, wandering Old Town, the CSU campus and hiking the peaceful foothills. Then there’s the Wild Animal Sanctuary where rescued animals roam large natural habitats at three different refuges. And of course if it’s Winter or Spring, we’d head to the mountains to do some local skiing at Eldora Mountain in Nederland. All along these journeys, we always run into interesting people that enhance the experience and leave us feeling connected to those around us.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success in life is really due to family, especially my amazing wife, Cindy, who designed the logo, did all the work on the website and has been incredibly supportive. Also, my parents, Susan and Jules have been very supportive and encouraging, as they always have been. Then there’s my best friend Josh, who’s like a brother to me, encouraging me daily. And of course I’m always inspired by my three adult children, wanting to show them that you can use your knowledge and skills, take risks and continue to learn and try new things.
