We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Tousley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susan, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
When I dedicate myself to something, I give it my all. When my husband and I started a family, I felt it was my dedication and commitment that made our family strong. After my kids were grown and gone from our house, I decided to give 100% to my art career. I believe this has played a pivotal role in my development as an artist.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always loved to create something out of nothing. Beautifying a house or a blank canvas, I love to make people feel good in their space. When they look at a piece of my artwork, I want it to feel positive and uplifting in their world. Many people have told me that I make “happy art”. Full of color, light and movement. I would like to think that I’ve made a small, positive difference with my art in their lives. I have finally managed to find my own individual and unique style. It has taken years to accomplish, but I believe that I’ve started to make a name for myself.
This journey hasn’t been exactly easy. At times, I’ve had some self doubt, but I’ve pushed through to find growth and accomplishment on the other side. It is my passion, and it gives me great joy to know people are enjoying my art in their home, office, or public space.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would say, you have to go to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre and see a concert. The setting is spectacular! Also, downtown Boulder on Pearl Street is very interesting and beautiful. Lots of street people doing their acts, and don’t forget the art galleries! Great places to eat/drink and the whole vibe is fun.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother’s influence has contributed to my success as an artist. When I was growing up, I was aware of her creative abilities with art, and this had a big impact on me. I believe that is where I am able to think outside the box. Even when painting from a photograph, my work gravitates to the abstract. I have always said that if you want realism, take a photograph.
I also want to recognize my husband, kids, sisters and brothers for their encouragement throughout my journey. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
