We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Oberholtzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydney, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
What I do and the way I think is very entrepreneurial and relationship driven. I thrived when I work on my own and building something that is mine. Like many, I lost my projects during the pandemic and needed to pivot. Luckily I was already on the path of never having to push my resume. When I was ready to make the leap on my own, I had and still have colleagues reaching out for marketing help.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has always evolved in sales and marketing. I started in sales, pivoted into media at an agency working for fortune 500 companies. Later back into sales within advertising and now working with brands in the tech world.
I am fortunate in that I work closely with founders and executive management so I truly understand business operations, goals and how marketing ties into it. Marketing is a revenue generator when done right BUT at first, marketing needs money so it is important to understand this concept.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a tough one as I recently moved to Denver from living in Chicago my entire life.
Hands down, take my friend to Meow Wolf. An ultimate experience that is indescribable.
At night, I’d take them to a Red Rocks show.
One of the days, I’d take them on a hike with a view of a Echo lake. We would grab a pizza at Homegrown in Washington park and have a picnic in the park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My colleague who has always pulled for me, Ken Yonan. We met during my media agency job, later was hired by him. He taught me that you can get rejected by a job, that it is not the end of your relationship. When he hired me, I was applying for a different role that I was not a fit for. I showed that I can take rejection which made me a better fit for a sales role.
Later on, he introduced me to the publisher who then offered me my role at Rolling Stone magazine.
Ken has been a mentor, friend and connector during my career.
