Meet Tara Goldin

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tara Goldin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tara, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My business offers the community and the world expert support for digestive health issues using holistic therapies. As a naturopathic gastroenterologist I am trained to find the root cause and to support healing from within. With over 15% of people on the planet suffering with chronic digestive symptoms this is a needed specialty. When the digestive system is not working optimally, the whole body suffers as this is the interface where we absorb all of our nutrients.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a Naturopathic Doctor with a specialty in digestive health. I have been in practice for 35 years in the Boulder area and 2 years ago transitioned to a fully telehealth practice. The pandemic was difficult in so many ways, but the silver lining was that we really got to dial in the technology to do telemedicine well. This way I can now offer my services to a wider community as well as people in the area that I live in.
I got into this profession due to my own health challenges starting in childhood. I was sickly and had failure to thrive and as a young person became obsessed with finding answers as our family doctor and other doctors in the area had none. I got into “health food” and started learning about botanicals and supplements and learned enough to be dangerous. So when my career in Environmental Biology seemed to have limited options and I had to decide whether to continue down that path or go on to Naturopathic Medical School, I decided to attend Naturopathic Medical School at Bastyr University in the Seattle area.
I graduated and worked at a practice in Montana for a while, then I moved to Boulder to start my own practice. It was not easy as I had no family in the area and had to build community and build my practice from scratch. I am stubborn so I just kept at it and kept on learning more.
Lessons along the way: If you have something to offer that people need, it is important to drop your fears of being in front of a camera etc. and to market. I had to learn social media which was not at all around when I started. And learning the technology in order to run a practice was another learning curve. When I started it was all paper charts, in-person networking, going to events and handing out business cards etc. Now people find me through referral and online. But the main thing is to offer quality and care with an open heart and always be learning because in medicine things change constantly.
I would like the world to know that I have experienced illness, poor physical fitness and suboptimal health and have pushed my way through to the other side where I now experience pretty great health. I understand many aspects of the journey as I have been through my own version of it so have lots of compassion for people in the midst of their journey,
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Favorite spots: I love the Dushambe Teahouse to eat for the ambiance and the food. I take almost all out of town guests there. I also love Acreage – great view and food. I would also take them hiking if they were able. My favorite trail is to Blue Lake in the Brainard Lake area – I love the Brainard area and depending upon the season would spend a day up there and if they were able would take them hiking there.
I would also take them up the Lion’s Lair trail – that is also a favorite closer in trail, but other faves are the Hessie Trail to Lost Lake, Lake Dorothy off the 4th of July Trail – in the summer the wildflowers are so amazing! And afterwords we could stop at Mountain People’s Coop in Nederland for a healthy snack.
I also love Hapa on the Pearl St Mall to eat – I love their sushi. And while we were there we would have to visit the Boulder Bookstore! If it was during the summer I would take them to the St. Julien to listen to some live music on the terrace or indoors in the wintertime.
But really I walk my dogs all around Louisville Open Space and that is the easiest best medicine of all!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout to some of my mentors who I have learned from – Dr. Nirala Jacobi, Dr. Allison Siebecker and Dr. Kathleen Janel. Also Dr. Jody Shevins who was one of the early trailblazing ND’s in my community.
