We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Sowa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
There are many habits as a photographer that have helped me to get to where I am. I think first and foremost is consistent practice. Taking the opportunity to practice (even when you aren’t getting paid) is how I grew and found my style. These days there are tons of photographers who host styled shoots in different settings, and this is a great place to go and practice by also seeing how others might pose the models or how to play with light. Which brings me to my next habit, and that is studying light. I don’t mean just by googling it, I mean going out in different lighting situations and playing with camera settings. Along with these I’d say it’s important to also critique your work.

The other big category I’d say is networking. This one goes for just about any small business. Connecting with other professionals in your industry is a great way to learn and to get yourself out there. This can lead to collaborations and fantastic learning opportunities.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I communicate with my clients and make sure their desires are heard, and I let them know that this is for them and not for me. I do what I need to do to help things go smoothly, but I also don’t push my clients into things that they don’t want. I connect with each of my couples or families in such a way that I get to see them grow. Sometimes it starts with engagement photos and works up to family photos. I get so excited when I get to come back to see the same people year after year. It’s not just about if your work looks like this or that, it’s also about the relationship and mark you leave on people. The connection that we as photographers get to create with our clients is amazing. In that way, it was very easy to get to where I am now. I love love whether it be between two people, parents and their children, or selflove. I put myself out there it resulted in this wonderful business of capturing memories and important days in people’s lives. Through all of this I learned to be what my client needs me to be for them, more than what my actual job description says. I can be a shoulder to cry on or the one who wrangles up the rowdy groomsmen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had someone coming to visit, we’d almost definitely be in the rockys the whole time! The state does have so much to offer, and I’d want to hit just about as much as we could. Starting in Golden we’d hit up downtown with all the little shops, take on walk or a tube down Clear Creek, and finish at Golden Mill. Next, I’d have us go up to Black Hawk to have a day of fun at the casinos. After that we’d hit up and probably spend at least two days in the Frisco/Silverthorne/Breckenridge area. If it’s summer we’ll take a hike on one of the many very beautiful trails or hit the slopes if it’s winter (these both go for most of the places on my list). The Willowbrook Trail in Silverthorne as well as the Blue Lakes Trail in Breckenridge would be must visits. Stopping afterward for a bite to eat at the Horseshoe Breckenridge. Of course after this can’t miss stopping in to visit Vail. This mountain town is famous and full of so much character. It feels like you stepped into Europe! If the trip is planned for a Sunday visit during summer we’d hit up the farmers market for some unique and yummy food. Lastly, I’d have to take this trip over to Aspen. Maroon Bells are a must hit if you can while in Colorado! Also, going up the mountain for some lawn games and great views. It’s hard to miss out on all this area has to offer!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing right now if it weren`t for my dad! My dad used to be a wedding photographer and is now a hobby photographer. I started taking photos the second I learned how to use a camera because of him. It’s something now I get to enjoy bonding over.
