We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Spaziani and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue a “creative” career, as I understand that the field of human sexuality can be seen as “taboo” or misunderstood. I have wanted to be a sex therapist since I was very young, as I have always been comfortable talking about sexual issues and topics. I 100% believe that especially in our Westernized culture, human sexuality can be a hard topic to discuss, and we see a lot of flaws in our systems and our children’s development because of it. Without being able to healthily discuss human sexuality, we grow up being left in the dark and uneducated. We wind up educating ourselves through media and pornography and get twisted ideas about what sex really looks like. It is my mission to hold the vulnerability with people to open up and talk about these issues, because it can feel like a huge weight off of our shoulders to say some of these things out loud. I hope to normalize the discussion around this topic to allow comfort and validation into people’s lives.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am currently a graduate student at CU Denver in a counseling program with a focus on couples and family. Outside of my program, I am also working on my certification to become an AASECT Certified sex therapist with the Sexual Health Alliance! I have wanted to be a sex therapist since I was very young. I used to play make-believe games where my occupation was a sex therapist, before I even knew this occupation existed! I currently work at both the Sexual Health Alliance and Respark Therapy as Heather McPherson’s Executive Assistant. I have been so blessed to occupy the roles here that I do, because I get to work alongside Heather who has been a sex therapist for 11+ years, and work with top professionals in the field of human sexuality. My growth throughout these roles as both a person and a professional is irreplaceable, and provides me with ample education on the field that I am not receiving in school. On the side, I am a teaching assistant for an undergraduate Human Sexuality course, and a bartender/waitress at a cute little pizza bar called Mckinner’s in downtown Littleton. I am also very blessed to hold these roles, as they are a part of who I am and a part of my passion. Human sexuality is my passion, but so is pizza, and I have the most wonderful, supportive team of pizza employees on my side through it all. As you can see, I am a girl of many roles in both my personal and professional life. It is absolutely not easy to manage so many roles at once, but it is something I am 100% dedicated to and passionate about. It is insanely challenging at times, but the people involved in both of my roles are what keep me going. I would not be who I am today without the important people by my side encouraging me along the way and allowing me to be my most vulnerable, authentic self. We are all in this together, and I wouldn’t be able to maintain this life otherwise.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As I am a Colorado-Native, I get so excited about showing people around my home state. Some of the classic places I would take a visiting friend to would be Red Rocks, Lookout Mountain in Golden, Idaho Springs to eat Beau Jo’s Pizza, and every brewery in every town to celebrate Colorado’s speciality beer selections. I would also take them Downtown Denver to see the skyline at night and to play some piano on the 16th Street Mall.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
