We had the good fortune of connecting with Tenia Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tenia, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Playing music, teaching music, creating art and being around my family and friends. These things bring me to my “Happy Place”. They also are where I see the most growth in my life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a professional musician(pianist and percussionist) and educator with over twenty years experience. I can teach all instruments but my focus is Piano and Percussion. Currently I am teaching at Denver Language School, Neighborhood Music and the Tenia Nelson Studio. I also play all kinds of music as well. So proud that I get to play with TNT, Spherio, Jon Romero y Amanecer, and Brass and Gold Society. Being a professional musician can be tough and tiring at times. There are times that I would play a show until 1am in the morning and then wake to get my son ready(I am a momma to Thelonious and a wife to Tim Nelson) for school and then after that, I would work teaching my lovely kiddos….sometimes until 8pm at night. It is a cray life but I would not change it for the world! I am proud that I can make people happy with my music. It makes my soul happy when I can do that!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Man…..what a great question!! I would take him/her to my favorite places!! Dazzle, Nocturne, Bourbon Chicken, Red Rocks, the Museum of Nature and Science are just a few places that I LOVE and adore!!! Visit some of the historic places and buildings in Five Points in Denver. So much history in this neighborhood. It was once called the “Harlem of the West”.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First I want to give a shoutout to my husband Tim Nelson and my son Thelonious for supporting me 110%. I also want to give a shout out to EVERYONE that has been a part of my music and music teaching journey!!! There are WAYYYYYY TOOOOOO many to list to but you know who you are!!
