We had the good fortune of connecting with Tree Sayles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tree, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started my business over 11 years ago, my goal was to create hair care products for people with naturally kinky, curly and wavy hair textures…like myself. I’d recently big chopped (cut off all of the relaxer from my hair) and was discovering how to care for my own curls, but I noticed a huge dilemma. There were very few products readily available for my hair type and I knew I had to do something about that. I’m not going to kid you, I was terrified! High anxiety and doubt from others pushed me to the brink of almost not starting my business. Thankfully, I was able to use that fear as fuel and begin what would later be known as Tree Naturals.

What should our readers know about your business?
I love curls and make hair products to care for them. Our products are moisture rich, soothing and our ingredients are ethically sourced. We only use Fair Trade Shea & Cocoa Butter in our formulas. We recently relaunched our brand back in August and I am so excited about that. We worked very hard on this project for 16 months and it was certainly a labor of love. We wanted to provide a more user-friendly experience for our customers and also we upgraded some of our products and packaging.

Honestly, I know I’ve made it this far in business by having an undying spirit; meaning on those days and you know the ones I’m talking about – when you can barely drag yourself out of bed and accomplish anything – I choose to get up and do the work. I’ve never stopped, I consistently show up for myself and my customers day in and day out. Is it easy? No it’s not, it’s extremely hard and gets lonely sometimes because of the work you will have to put in, but is it worth it? Absolutely! As with anything, the more you repeat a behavior, the better you become at it…you start building mental muscle memory if you will. I’ve also learned that self-care is necessary. I take time for rest, walks in nature and whatever fills my cup back up.

I want the world to know that Tree Naturals exists and that we pour our entire heart and soul into each product we create.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow, I’m definitely taking my bestie to Millies and City Diner for brunch, Bar Solita for lunch and my absolute favorite little Mexican restaurant Chicano’s Cochina for the best food and drinks. We would switch it up and go to Lillie Pearl for another amazing dinner option as well. We would hang out at Belle Isle for a local performance, check out the art walk down Broad Street and travel 30 minutes out of the city to Saude Creek Winery – they have the best blue bell slushies on the planet.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes! I would like to dedicate my shout out to Davia Archer. Not only is she an amazing sister-friend, she has been absolutely pivotal to the success of Tree Naturals! Whether it was PR work, late night “biz date nights” or our many events and roadtrips. I could not have done this without her 🤎
