Meet Christian Wolf | Comic Book Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Wolf and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christian, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Creating comic books is a labor-intensive job, especially in today’s market. Once upon a time, a comic book was created by a team, consisting of a writer, artist, inker, editor, letterer, and colorist. In the advent of the digital age, many of these jobs are now handled by a single individual, and in my case, it is the combination of the artist(line artist) and inker. I have found success creating comic books as a line artist and inker due to my dedication and love for the craft. I have spent the past 13 years improving and perfecting it. I find that constant study, constant practice, and achievable goals are the key to succeeding. The more time spent on a craft such as mine allows one to problem-solve, and pull from inspiration to turn out something original and consistent with their style. Time management is a key factor too, after all, one may have a day job.
The more you believe in what you’re creating, the better reason you have to ignore the nonsense life will throw at you, and you can put your energy into your craft. Make it the most important thing, and like anything else important to you, spend a lot of time on it. Do it because you love it and the habits of nurturing your craft will come easy.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My blend of comic book line art and inking pulls from many great comic book artists, such as Jean “Moebius Giraud, Frank Frazetta, Alex Toth, and Greg Capullo. In turn, my style reflects the dark, gritty, and mysterious allure the aforementioned are known for. I believe these influences have guided my hand to produce what I create today, and I believe it sets my style apart from most indie artists. The comic series “Soma City”, for Red Sea Comics, has helped me develop a style and process which has only improved with the completion of issue #1. I am most proud of my work on this project because I designed the page layouts, the characters, the world, the covers, and the logo. I had full control of the aesthetic of the book and I hold it dear as one of my finest accomplishments. I’m currently working on issue #2 with writer, Chris Moses, which should be even finer.
In 2019 I began streaming on Twitch and Youtube, showcasing the process for my work, and gained a small following. Of that following was one very tenacious young writer, named Chris Moses. Moses had created a small publishing house for his books at the time we met on my stream, he presented an opportunity to flesh out a story he’d been sitting on, titled Soma City. The story is set in a world where the people are anthropomorphized microbes, and a contact tracer named Denton Dials attempts to clean his corrupt city during a mayoral transition. I fell in love with the script and the Red Sea and have been working on projects with Moses ever since. I work with the Red Sea creating cover art, variant cover art, books, and offshoots of other titles. I even do a little editing and lettering for some books.
After putting in my 10,000 hours and even more, I was equipped with the skills needed to work with a proper indie publisher. I would advise any indie comic artist to find a writer and indie publisher and start creating. Finishing a single issue, cover included is a serious task, but once you’ve accomplished that goal, you learn so much and have the confidence to do it again, and better. My ultimate goal is to write and draw my books and perhaps have a publishing house of my own.
If you are a lover of comic books I strongly recommend checking out my books and other titles at Redseacomics.com. Follow me and Red Sea Comics on Instagram and be a part of our Kickstarter campaigns. The support helps and grants us more time to create a product you love.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This shout-out goes to the incredible Nick Flook. Nick and I have known each other since our college days in 2004. Nick Flook is the one friend who has never let life’s constant curve balls dishevel him from the “artist’s path”.
Nick’s portfolio offers a spectacle of infinite potential, with his work in 3d animation, commercial advertisement, conceptual design, drawing, and now, painting. The man’s talent is simply off the chart.
Nick has also been a great influence and motivator to me. Throughout our 20-year friendship, Nick has given me opportunities to work alongside or for him and I will never forget that. I hope he knows that his belief in himself and his belief in me has been a big part of what kept me going all these years.
Here’s to another 20, Bud!
