We had the good fortune of connecting with T$unami811 and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi T$unami811, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are important in pursuit of achieving/attaining more for yourself and those around you. I believe risk looks different for everyone and it’s important to take risks that make sense based on your relationship to yourself. By that I mean relationship to your mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and financial circumstances. There are risks I’ve taken where I didn’t necessarily have the right financial circumstances, but I knew that my mental, physical, emotional and spiritual were all aligned so I wasn’t too worried about the finances. In risk based experiences things will get hard, but I believe in the toughest moments your true character is revealed. Without the risks I’ve taken I wouldn’t be so secure about my success. Risks are a measure of dedication to what I’m doing and the people I doing it with.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create based on how I feel. Sometimes I feel hype; sometimes I feel sad; sometimes angry etc. I think what sets me apart is my courage often concours my fear of failure. I know artists that always wait until, “the moment is right,” or when, “everything is perfect.” I don’t believe there’s ever a right time or a perfect, polished product. There will always be ways to improve performance and execution. I think a big part of how I got to where I am today has to do with trial and error. I’ve tried so many different things in music: style, beat selection, vocal inflections, roll out strategies, promotional and marketing strategies. At this point I know I still have a long way to go and more things to try, but with deductive reasoning I’m more aware of what doesn’t work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from the Lower East Side in NYC, but I live in Bushwick, BK now. So I would just give them train fare and tell them to explore lol.
I’m playing, but for coffee my go to now is T/Co or Bushwick Bakery.

I’d say for eats there’s a variety in price ranges and cultures. I love Jamaican, Spanish & Italian food. For Jamaican I’d say “Taylor Made” on Classon Ave. Spanish food I gotta go with “Casa Adela” on the Lower East Side or “NeNes” in Bushwick. Italian I’d say “3 Giovani” in Greenwich Village.

As far as places to visit, you definitely want to experience live music when you come to NYC. I can list of a number of beautiful places, but I’d say go outside. Go to the park and see all of the different cultures that exist here. New York is such an interesting place that the park might have better dancing and music vibes than the club.

Lastly, I like to spend some of my time giving back to the community. If volunteering interests you I’d say pay a visit to “Collective Focus Resource Hub,” on Broadway between Bed-Stuy and Bushwick.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Big shoutout to God. My family. My partner. The Lower East Side. East New York. Members & Affiliates of ALL my creative collectives. Any and all supporters of my life and my creative endeavors. Big shout to my doctors!
