We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Gohl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My dream started in my senior year of high school. About March or April of 2018. I was talking with my super close friend about getting a “professional” camera to take pictures of our cars, so one day, I went out and spent the money I had been working so hard to save up, but little did I know at the time, that it would flourish into what it is today. In the summer of 2018, one of my close friends asked me to do her senior pictures. This was my first paid shoot, and I always remain humble about it, because it meant so much to me that someone believed in me enough to take pictures. I didn’t really start getting serious about photography until later in 2019 when I finally got a photo editing software. Once I got that, I started gaining more traction. Though I am still working very hard today, I would not have gotten here without the constant support from my peers. With all this being said, When I launched my brand name in 2018 after the senior shoot that I did, I came up with the name “Only the Best,” not because I was trying to be self conceded or seem like I was the best, but simply because, you can only be the best person that you want to be. If you put your all into something that you love, then it’s simple enough. You are the best.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think that the main thing that sets me apart from others is the fact that I am open to trying new things. For example, I went out on a limb and shot my best friend’s senior soccer season. There are a lot of photographers out there that lock themselves down to one thing (this is not a bad thing by any means), but I think that I am set apart from others because I have experience in many different styles. I would not be where I am today without the support of the people mentioned previously. It has not been an easy road by any means, and anyone will tell you that I have almost put the camera on the shelf and walked away from it all. Saying that something is easy is incorrect in my opinion. We all go through struggles and even if we think it was easy once we make it to the other side, there will always be something difficult about the craft that we perfect. I overcome my challenges by taking a step back and seeing just where I came from and where I want to be. I re-center myself, pull my head out of the clouds, and surround myself with mentors who push me to excel and keep going, no matter what. I have learned that anything in life is possible if you put your mind to it. Your mind will forever be your greatest weakness if you let it be. But at the end of the day, you have to just keep going. If there is one thing that I want the world to know about me and my brand, it is that you can do anything you want to if you put your all into it. If there is one thing that I want those reading to remember, it is that you are only the best. You are the best; mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister, etc.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting, I would love to take a trip for a day or two up to the mountains. I love a spot called Turquoise Lake. It has some very beautiful hiking trails and views. I would also love to go up to Breckenridge because it has some very beautiful photography spots and I love the small mountain town vibes. Outside of going to the mountains, I would love to take some time to explore Denver. Specifically RiNo and the surrounding areas. They have some beautiful murals for pictures and great places to eat and drink. Bottom line, if my friend were to visit, I would love to take them to some of my favorite photography locations and capture the moment, all the smiles, and memories.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a few people that I want to shoutout if that is allowed. First, I want to shout my family out (my mom – Michele, my dad – Ryan, and my older brother – Jacob). They have all been there since day one and have ALWAYS supported my dream, even when I didn’t. In fact, Jacob was the first person to buy one of my scenery photos and hang it up in his house. Since then, my parents have gotten a few prints, and so has my brother’s girlfriend! Next, I want to shout my close friends out (Dimitrios, Devin, Jayden, Alyssa). Dimitrios was the one that was sitting next to me in that English class when he convinced me to buy a camera. Ever since then, we have done numerous shoots together and he has ALWAYS supported me. In fact, we even joked around and I call him my manager now. As for Devin and Jayden, they have gone to numerous shoots with me and have always supported my work. They have given me ideas, offered advice, and have kept it real with me 100% of the time. Alyssa, I want to thank her personally because ever since I started she has always modeled for me. She has never questioned my thought processes or anything. To this day she still models with her friends for me. Next, I want to give a huge shoutout to my fellow photographers who continue to support and push me to be my best. Huge shoutout to my friend Cam (@Behindthelenze) for being an amazing friend and fellow photographer. He has kept it real with me and has been honest since the jump. Lastly, I want to thank Larry Reed (Aka, Larry Legend). We knew each other in high school, and once he graduated and started working on music, I always supported him because I saw something in him. I saw raw talent. I love to support people like me who are scratching and clawing for a way in, the ones who are searching for the next big break. Before COVID, Larry actually invited me out to shoot a show for him (sadly it was cancelled, but we have planned for the future). Also, Larry had me do a shoot for him. He believed in me and still does. He got me this interview and for that, I am forever thankful. To the people I mentioned above, I am eternally thankful and grateful for EVERYTHING that you have done for me so far. It means the world to me. I am nowhere close to being done.
