We had the good fortune of connecting with Undrae Fairley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Undrae, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
First and foremost, I saw a huge need in my community. No one was really knowledgeable about health or finances, and I have the knowledge and ability to educate people on how to improve their physical and financial situations. I saw my business as being able to impact families’ health while also improving group economics-ultimately, moving communities forward.

What should our readers know about your business?
As a personal trainer/strength and conditioning coach, I began to notice a correlation between my clients’ physical health and financial health. In thinking about my own challenges as a struggling college student, this prompted my curiosity into that correlation, which led me to getting my securities licenses. I’d like to think I am one of the only trainers who can not only assist clients with getting their bodies into shape, but also get their finances into shape. I can help with retirement planning, investments, education plans, annuities, etc…while coaching clients to making better choices when it comes to nutrition and exercise. That’s probably the part that I am most proud about; I am actually forging my own path instead of following a well-worn path.

This journey to where I am now was not easy, though. I’m what you might call (as my wife calls us) an “extraverted introvert”. I thrive in engaging with people face-to-face, but I can start looking for the door very quickly afterward! It took me years to get my fitness business to a viable point, and the last year and a half in thinking through how to merge the two industries and market myself as being credible in both. Imagine being known as a “fitness guy”, then all of a sudden telling people I can help them with their money. People are already very guarded when it comes to finances, so that in itself continues to be a challenge. I welcome all of it because my mission is to help people master their lives by dramatically improving their physical and financial health.

I think my biggest asset when it comes to my clientele is my relatability. I came from meager means, having been raised by the most amazing single mother. I was also a skinny kid. I literally had to seek the knowledge and do the work of building both my body and my finances from scratch, and let me tell you, the struggle is real for both!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I live in Austin, Texas, so it’s pretty easy to show folks a good time here. My best friend and I are big carnivores, so we’re definitely hitting up either Franklin’s, Coopers, or Terry Black’s barbeque. After a nap we’ll get a kettlebell training session in. Our cool down consists of taking a dip in Barton Springs and lounging at Zilker Park.

Over the course of the next several days that’s a rinse and repeat, changing up the meals at any number of eateries around town. Since it’s the summer, we’ve definitely got to throw a boat party on Lake Travis. Since we’re big gun enthusiasts, several ranges would be on our radar.

Finally, what’s coming to Austin without a little live music? Pick one: Antone’s, The Elephant Room, etc… with a table full of whiskey and some of our other guys doing what we do! The last night that we go anywhere, we’re going to go to the studio. I love having my boys with me when I go to a studio session, because they give me so much inspiration and we have so much fun!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
No one comes upon success alone. They are guided by mentors, nudged by peers, and challenged by the watching eyes of those who look up to them. My journey is no different. I want to, first of all, thank God for all the good and the tests. I thank my wife, Lauren, for always supporting me (even during times when she questioned my sanity). I want to shout out my business coaches and good friends, Edward Leos and Reginald Reid. Lastly, I give so much credit to what I’ve learned from the book, “Indistractable” by Nir Eyal. It’s really helped me get rid of distractions and keep the main things the main things!
