We had the good fortune of connecting with Verity Noble and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Verity, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The average American produces 1,704 pounds of trash each year. That’s enough to fill 23 million garbage trucks, which is 50 garbage trucks per minute! Yes, you heard right. 50 GARBAGE TRUCKS PER MINUTE! And before we pat ourselves on the back for our awesome recycling habits here in Colorado, only 12% of our waste gets recycled, which is well under the national average of 35%. I began to feel totally powerless against the ever growing tsunami of plastic. It has become a seemingly inevitable part of life unless you have the time and energy to schlep miles to go to a bulk store every 3 months, painstakingly find out where to recycle every aspect of your life or go without a lot of your favorite foods because they’re packaged in plastic. I did all these things and it was a pain! Ugh. I knew there had to be a solution. So I teamed up with a group of like-minded serial entrepreneurs from different walks of life with different skill sets. We’re all equally passionate about putting a stop to this crazy cycle of waste so decided to launch Nude Foods Market, a zero-waste grocery, prepared meals and household products delivery service based in Boulder, CO. Deliveries are even made BY BIKE (unless there’s snow on the ground, then it’s Electric Vehicle.) In the last 6 months we’ve saved over 5000 pieces of packaging from being used! What should our readers know about your business?
Nude Foods Market delivers local, organic groceries, meals and household products in zero-waste, reusable containers to your door by bicycle. I am most proud that from meeting in January 2020, the founders have built a financially successful business that our customers LOVE and that is making a serious dent in the packaging produced by shoppers in Boulder. Looking back, my career makes total sense but when I was in it, that certainly wasn’t always the case. This is my 3rd company so being an entrepreneur has always come naturally to me – the first was a members club and events company in London, the second, a finance and accounting company, Simple Startup and the third is Nude Foods Market. Each business has suited different periods of my life and with each one, I’ve learned SO much. – Having co-founders makes starting a business 10x easier (I have luckily not had co-founder issues so far!) – Follow the Lean Startup methodology and test as much as you can as fast as you can for as little as you can – Get up early every morning and follow a routine – Plan your week to the minute so you can get everything done – Get a coach, it’s truly gamechanging. Brandi Mason of BB Ties is my coach and she’s literally changed my life. – Always ask for help and don’t be afraid to hussle. People can only say no. I now mentor at Techstars, Galvanize, and Watson University so I’m able to share some of that experience with people just starting out. I believe that we all have a responsibility to protect the earth and its most vulnerable inhabitants. I am never too busy to help someone in need.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being British, I do have a lot of people to stay for at least a week so this is easy for me! 1. Margaritas and plantains at Bar Taco 2. Mountain bike Super Betasso from my house – my fave route by far! 3. Hike Sanitas to Lion’s Lair and down Centennial 4. Hike Royal Arch 5. Coffee at Beleza 6. Vegan ice cream at Sweet Cow 7. Drinks on the rootop of Rosetta Hall 8. Bike 360 degrees round Boulder on the bike paths with brunch at Tangerine half way round (I do this with EVERY guest!) 9. Lunch at the Kitchen 10. Paddle boarding at the Rez
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout my husband for always supporting me and believing in me. He is the opposite of me when it comes to business. I’m the big risk taker who jumps in with both feet and hates dealing with the numbers side of things. He’s a super talented financial whizz and entrepreneur who asks me the hard questions that I hate but absolutely need to know the answers to!
