Meet Veronica Whitehead | Independent salon owner and stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Veronica Whitehead and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Veronica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I decided that I was going to be opening my own business, I had some fear but knew if I didn’t take the chance to do it then, I probably wouldn’t have done it. At that point, I had worked in salons for over 13 years and had experience not just behind the chair but as an inventory specialist, salon manager, and training manager. With all the different roles I had during those years, I knew about the back end of the business and what to expect from working with vendors, promoting myself, and how to grow a successful business. After stepping down from managing a salon for over 2 years, I knew that there were things I wanted to do differently and give a better experience to my clients. Being in a salon suite gave me the freedom to do just that and to focus just on one client at a time. Plus having the privacy of a salon suite, my clients were able to relax and enjoy their time in my chair more.

What should our readers know about your business?
My goal is to give every client an amazing experience. From the moment we meet, through the thorough consultation, head massage and hot towel service, to a customized color or haircut and style, I want my clients to be pampered. Incorporating the hot towels into my shampoo/conditioners has made a lasting impression- not only with the added essential oils but the benefit from the conditioner penetrating into their hair. I (sometimes) get more excited about my clients’ transformations than they do! I love the instant gratification that comes with my job! Staying up on current trends and education is essential. Whenever safely possible, I attend in-person education. I thrive off the energy of fresh ideas and inspiring stylists. When I moved my business from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Denver, Colorado, I knew it would be challenging to build clientele, but my determination has seen me through.
My experience both behind and in front of the chair set me up for success (along with my marketing manager!). Since relocating in October 2021, I’ve already surpassed goals that I set for myself. With the 5 star reviews, word of mouth, and networking, I have been able to slowly make my mark.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being new to the city myself, I’m experiencing new things all the time! The mountains are what called me here and I love being able to explore them with friends, so an incredible hike is a must-do. Depending on the time of year, get some skiing in along with a hot spring soak. We definitely would check out downtown Denver, with its amazing shops and restaurants. I love stumbling across new places and trying them out especially fellow small businesses.

I contribute so much of my success to my friend, marketing manager, and graphic designer, Teresa Laurent. She has guided and pushed me to new heights with my business. All the work that she does on the back end to ensure that potential and current clients can find and follow me is incredible. I would not be where I am without her. She helped me get my business up off the ground when I decided to venture off on my own with her wonderful sense of marketing and design.

My relationships, past and present – their encouragement allowed me to recognize my worth and skillset with what I do. Being cheered on by my family and friends has helped me grow my confidence and creativity within the industry and beyond.
