We had the good fortune of connecting with Xandra Hawes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Xandra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It wasn’t until my late 20s that it dawned on me that my way of thinking and operating had entrepreneur written all over it. I knew I cared about people deeply and that my purpose was to help people heal, but I always thought I would bring my skills to someone else’s dream or framework. I never realized that I could hold the creative vision and do the ground work entirely for myself.

In high school, I had three jobs merely because I loved the diversity, and my brain could somehow hold all the pieces while attending school. I loved the constant change, and working in different environments pushed me to develop different skills faster. As a business owner and self-taught entrepreneur, I am constantly juggling different hats, learning new things, shifting my creative ideas, playing with new concepts. I love it. I love being able to change as a being and offer my energy to others as my knowledge and skills increase.

Part of working at the intersection of psychology, spirituality and energy healing means I get to constantly weave and update the things I offer to people with my own life experience and learning. I might travel to a different country and take a class on a specific energy healing style, and then I get to come home and incorporate it into my work. It’s incredibly rewarding to weave my purpose, passion and career together.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Soul Essence Psychotherapy is a holistic therapy practice that combines the ancient wisdom of Buddhism with psychology and energy healing. I work with sensitive, empathic and intuitive people that are hoping to overcome anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges by connecting deeply with their soul essence. Traditional psychotherapy sees clients as “patients” that are attending meetings due to a lack in ability, skill or thought process. I see everyone as a wise soul on the path to achieving wholeness. Working together becomes a co-created healing journey where they connect more deeply with their inner compass and wise self.

My practice is a bit different, as I often see intuitive and psychic children, teenagers and adults that are HSPs (highly sensitive people) and have a hard time letting go of energy or become overwhelmed easily. It feels amazing to offer this support to this population because it was truly the help I needed as a child. I went through a very difficult spiritual awakening as a teenager, and I didn’t have very many resources to understand my sensitivity or intuition.

I created my practice out of a deep love of helping others heal and supporting their reconnection to their best selves. It’s been almost a ten-year journey, and I’ve had the privilege of studying with many wonderful teachers in numerous professional and eclectic mystic traditions all over the world. The therapy I offer to my clients is a synergistic fusion of many wisdom traditions, and honors their soul essence and the importance of this connection for guidance, grounded-ness and joy.

Truly, my business is my soul passion. And the biggest lesson I’ve learned has been around authentic rest. It is easy for me to go full steam ahead and forget about my own self-care, so I’ve had to cycle over and over with deepening my practice to rest. I realized the busier my practice became, the higher amount of rest that was required to balance my energy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First off, all of the friends I love will eat Ramen, so we would absolutely head to Jinya in Denver for dinner. It’s rare to find a ramen place that has gluten-free noodles and beef-free broth, and the crispy rice is perfection!

On another night, we might head over to Thai Basil for their savory peanut curry dish and then do a ghost tour through Cheesman Park.

For some additional late night fun, we might go dancing at Milk Bar, hit up a concert at the Mission Ballroom or go to Denver Comedy Underground for some laughs.

Most of the people I hang out with want to be in nature, so we might do a hike near Georgetown, check out the railroad or do a haunted mining tour and then spend the evening at Indian Hot Springs.

For my sweet tooth friends (that are vegan and/or gf), we would get the amazing oat milk ice cream at the Make Believe Bakery in Denver and maybe get some chocolate hoho cupcakes to go.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely. I would love to dedicate this shoutout to my partner, Nick. For several years now, he has put up with my crazy ideas, freak out moments, mountains of stress, and joyous laughter… sometimes even all in the same day. He listens to all my podcasts, grounds me when I need a reminder to move slow, and will sing silly songs to me and dance around the kitchen when I’m grumpy and lacking some play and humor. He even does my taxes. He’s simply the best and it’s hard to put into words how much meaning and joy this being brings to my existence.
