We had the good fortune of connecting with Yung Lil and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yung, why did you pursue a creative career?
I honestly started rapping for fun at first. But I seen the current state of rap and felt like it was underwhelming. And that I could drop a better tape than 90% of these guys. So I dropped my debut mixtape just because. And I actually garnered a fanbase from it which led me to continue rapping and taking music more seriously. It’s worked out so far.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is the versatility I have as both a person and an artist. I grew up in the hood but also grew up in the suburbs at one point in my life. So I been everywhere. And my music reflects that. So I really have something for everybody, and it’s all authentic. Getting where I am today was not easy, but when you stay persistent in your craft and true to yourself and ignore the haters, you can’t lose. And it’s only gotten me further.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
You gotta be real careful moving around Philly. But for cheesesteaks I generally like Larry’s off Rising Sun. Gotta hit up Wawa for a hoagie (a “sub” as some of y’all call it). I get pizza from any local pizza joint that has beef pepperoni. The pearl, SoulfedPhilly, Jamaican D’s. Then I normally party either on south st or down center city. All the touristy stuff is cool like the Rocky statue, art museum, love statue, and liberty bell if you’re from outta town. I go to the eagles game every time I visit too. Other than that I stay out the way.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
