We had the good fortune of connecting with Zach Hoheisel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zach, why did you pursue a creative career?
I grew up hunting and fishing, and always worked blue collar jobs. I never thought of myself as artistic or creative until I picked up a camera to try and document some of my outdoor adventures. I fell in love with story telling, and I felt like I had a natural ability to make a compelling story. Because of my love of this, I learned all I could about how to make the visual aspect of this look better. After years of doing it, I progressed and was eventually able to make a full time career by having a camera in my hands. Now I not only get to tell my own stories in a creative way, but also the stories of others. The outdoor space will always be my niche, because that is where I’m most comfortable. And my favorite part about it is, you never know what is going to happen. You can’t make a story, you just have to document what happens and do your best to capture the moments, emotions, and things that happen along the way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing in this career was a bit of a progression. It started with my personal brand, but as I got better with a camera other companies started taking notice. After college, I worked for an agency in the corporate world. Although this wasn’t my passion, I learned so much in my two years there. I was working as a creative in so many different industries, and learned a lot of the hard skills involved. After growing my outdoor brand, I was finally able to take the leap and go full time as a creative in the outdoor industry. It’s never easy, there is a lot of travel, sleepless nights, and all day edits to get the job done. But I also get to see some amazing places, and meet amazing people. I could never go back to a “normal” job again. The things that make it difficult also make it exciting, and constantly gives you a challenge to overcome.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My two favorite places I have visited in Colorado are Veil, and Silverthorne. I mostly go for the fly fishing, which is one of my favorite hobbies, and also one of my favorite things to create content around. There are some amazing camping opportunities, and a wide variety of streams you can choose from depending on what kind of adventure you want to have. Checking out some of the local fly shops is always fun, and there’s always a cool little brewery within a decent drive.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give credit to my parents. When I told them I wanted a camera for my high school graduation they didn’t even question it, they knew I had plans. During the beginning years of working for free, traveling, and losing money while trying to turn this passion into a career, they always supported me and encouraged me to never give up.
