We had the good fortune of connecting with Zach Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zach, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue a career in sound healing because music and sound have always been my vehicle for transcendence. The impact that music and sound has had on my mind and body over the years interested me to no end, so when i was introduced to the world of sound healing about 5 years ago, I knew I needed to look further. After experiencing a few soundbath sessions, my curiosity led me to reading books, buying instruments, and performing sound healing sessions for friends and family out of my home in Thornton. I’m a carpenter by trade. After about 10 years of being a carpenter, the impact it was having on my body led me to realize that it just wasn’t a sustainable career choice for me. So earlier this year i decided to move on and pursue sound healing as my career and bring what I’ve been learning to a more public forum instead of just reserving it for only close friends and family.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For me, sound healing isn’t just about making pretty sounds, it’s a vehicle for sonic expression. I use a variety of instruments to create interesting soundscapes that can take your consciousness to the furthest reaches of space, as well as relaxing, grounding soundscapes to being healing and rest to the mind and body. I love using a wide range of instruments to keep each soundbath interesting and create different sound experiences. I use gongs, Crystal Tones alchemy bowls, bar chimes, ocean drum, Tibetan singing bowls, and more. For me, sound healing is the perfect combination of creative expression and holding space for people’s healing. I have always been drawn to come alongside folks in their healing journeys. Growing up, I wasn’t sure if i should be a therapist, a pastor, a teacher, a musician; i just wanted to help people and be creative while doing it. Eventually sound healing kind of found me, in a way. The more I read about sound and its impact on the mind and body, and the more i experienced transcendence through music, the more I knew i wanted to pursue sound healing as a profession. It’s been interesting and difficult because i went from a very tangible and accepted profession (carpentry), to something most people don’t know much about. I am so immersed in the world of sound and sound healing that i forget most of the population hasn’t even heard the word “soundbath”. My goal with my work and art is to make sound healing accessible and I believe i have a unique approach with sound healing because i try to bridge the gap between the “woo-woo” and the logical/scientific. I want people to know that you don’t need to know anything about sound, chakras, yoga, or cymatics to benefit from receiving sound as a vehicle for healing. All you have to do is show up with an open mind and the sound will do the rest. It’s a beautiful way for me to kind of get out of the way and just be a vessel. There is so much we are discovering and so much we still don’t understand about sound and that excites me. I want to be at the forefront of these discoveries as well as on the front lines of the healing revolution that’s currently happening in the United States and around the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many great places in Denver and the surrounding areas that I love to bring people. One of those places is Spectra Art space. While I absolutely LOVE places like Meow Wolf, it can be a little overwhelming for some people. Spectra is a great place for folks to kind of dip their toes in to the immersive art world. Plus the fact that it’s partially outside makes it a great place to enjoy the incredible weather we have here most of the year. I love breing outside so the next obvious choice is the denver the botanic gardens. For the music lovers, Wax Trax is one of my all time favorite record stores so that’s a must visit. Some of my favorite restaurants are Acova, City O City, Spice Of India up in Broomfield, and Rivers And Roads Coffee. I also love hiking so I try to bring everyone that comes to town on at least one good hike, most of the time in the flatirons. I hike that area almost every week, the energy is so grounding and yet so expansive at the same time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I absolutely give credit to my wife, Laurel. She has supported me in every endeavor and also does a lot of my branding and social media content. She is so incredibly talented and supportive and i would not be able to do this without her! I also give credit to Ram Dass, a man I consider to be one of the most prominent teachers in my life through his books and lectures. I would not be on this path had i not been exposed to his teachings and thoughts which changed my life in profound ways.
