We had the good fortune of connecting with Zakiya & Russell Moss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zakiya & Russell, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

Drip Queen Coffee was envisioned and established with a profound thought process deeply embedded in sustainability, quality, and unmatched service. The foundation of Drip Queen Coffee was not just to be a retailer of coffee and tea but to emerge as a conscious brand, making a tangible difference in the industry and the world, especially in mental health awareness. From the start, Drip Queen Coffee pledged to provide their customers with the ultimate coffee and tea experience, boasting high-quality, fair-trade products ethically sourced from across the globe. This emphasis on fair trade ensures that the beverages are of the highest caliber and that the brand contributes to creating a more reasonable and equitable world for coffee and tea growers.

Drip Queen Coffee firmly believes in doing its part for the environment. The commitment extends beyond the products to the materials used; 100% biodegradable coffee cups, reusable bottles, and even water-dissolving packing material all showcase that sustainability is not an add-on but an integral part of the business model. The commitment doesn’t stop there. Mental health is a cause close to the brand’s heart, and it is passionate about advocating for community wellness. Recognizing that mental well-being is just as crucial as physical health, Drip Queen Coffee is the only black-owned Dessert Cold Brew Coffee and CBD Infused Coffee Distributor in Colorado and strives to create a relaxing and inviting, (and non-dairy) atmosphere wherever our coffee is enjoyed.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Drip Queen Coffee emerged from a desire to not only serve exceptional coffee and tea but to do so in a conscious, sustainable, and community-oriented manner. What sets us apart in the bustling coffee industry is our unwavering commitment to three core values: Sustainability, Quality, and Service. We are not merely a retailer but a brand that intertwines the love for exquisite beverages with a deep-rooted commitment to making a tangible difference in the world.

Navigating our journey to the present has been far from smooth, yet every obstacle has only fortified our path toward expansion and development. Drip Queen Coffee is a self-funded, veteran-owned, women-led, and black-owned enterprise, a unique combination in the coffee industry. Our offerings, like the distinctive Purple Slipper Functional Coffee—a CBD-infused brew that brings many mental and physical benefits and is an excellent alternative to conventional options—stand out uniquely. Holding the title of the sole Black-owned CBD coffee and Dessert Cold Brew Coffee distributor in Colorado fills us with pride. Additionally, our Really Zonka Dessert Flavored Cold Brew Coffees, crafted to be non-dairy and lactose-free, not only cater to those with dietary restrictions but also facilitate nationwide shipping across the U.S. Our products transcend mere consumption; they represent an experience meticulously curated with the highest degree of care and expertise.

Our pride and enthusiasm for our sustainability efforts run deep. Our dedication to the environment extends beyond mere words into tangible actions, exemplified by our pledge to donate 1% of our proceeds to “1% For the Planet.” This ensures that every purchase made contributes to a broader global cause. Moreover, we are committed to inclusivity, ensuring our offerings cater to a wide and diverse customer base.

The path has been challenging, from establishing a brand in a competitive market to ensuring that our values are not compromised in pursuing growth. Being self-funded meant meticulous financial planning, strategic marketing, and a gradual, steady expansion. The lessons have been numerous. We’ve learned that taking chances often paves the way for unexpected opportunities. Our self-taught approach to understanding various business processes has enhanced our knowledge and enabled us to innovate and improvise in numerous ways.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

If my best friend were visiting the area, I’d ensure they’d experience the best Colorado Springs offers, starting with a visit to Drip Queen Coffee. Here, we’d immerse ourselves in a relaxing, jazz-filled ambiance while savoring exquisite Honey Lavender coffee or a Red Velvet Cheesecake Cold Brew Coffee. Our next stop would be to visit PureLee Redefined Medispa in North Colorado Springs, owned by veterans Dr. Marvin and Kenya Lee, who specialize in innovative aesthetic facial treatments, enjoying a moment of pampering and rejuvenation.

For a burst of energy and a unique workout experience, we’d head to WorkTime Athletic Performance, a one-of-a-kind fitness center inside the Chapel Hills Mall, owned by veterans Jai and Denise Jackson. After working up an appetite, Ivywild School would be our next stop. This renovated elementary school has transformed into a hub of amazing eateries, and we’d particularly indulge in the “Loaded Sweets” that come highly recommended.

Shopping would be on the agenda, too, with a visit to The Hause Thrift & Lounge at the Chapel Hills Mall, offering a treasure trove of retro and nostalgic clothing and items in a vintage, hip setting.

No visit to Colorado Springs would be complete without soaking in its natural beauty and rich history. We’d explore the Garden of the Gods, ascend to the top of Pikes Peak, and delve into the rich history of the United States Air Force Academy.

Each of these locations offers a unique experience and represents the spirit of Colorado Springs, blending natural beauty, innovation, and a strong sense of community. It’s a week that would offer sights and experiences and a genuine feel of the vibrant and warm community we’re proud to be a part of.
