Our upbringing and its impact on our adult lives

There are so many factors that affect how our lives turn out, but one of the most interesting is how our backgrounds give us unique strengths and perspectives that affect who we are as adults. We asked rising stars from the community to tell us about their background and upbringing and how they feel it’s impacted who they are today.

I am originally born and raised in Miami, Florida specifically a sub-city called Hialeah (aka little Cuba) haha. I am 1st generation Cuban American. My parents won what is called the “lottery” in Cuba in order to leave and travel to the US in search for a better life. My upbringing is different than most. I didn’t have a normal life like most Americans. Being the 1st generation immigrant and first born daughter from my mom’s side, I had a lot of pressure growing up to be successful – to be grateful to have an opportunity to live in the United States and not in a dictatorship like my parents did in Cuba. I’m from Westminster, Colorado – born and raised with four siblings in a big, busy household. My parents were (and still are) amazing. My name is Jacqueline Magaña, and I’m from San Julián, Jalisco a small town in Mexico where tradition runs deep and resilience is part of our identity. I grew up surrounded by hard-working people, strong values, and the belief that your voice matters, even when the world tries to silence it. That upbringing didn’t just shape me, it fueled my purpose: to tell real stories, to stand for truth, and to open space for those who feel invisible.
