What’s the right work-life balance for you?

Our community is filled with hard-working, high achieving entrepreneurs and creatives and so work-life balance is a complicated, but highly relevant topic. We’ve shared some responses from the community about work life balance and how their views have evolved over time below.

I am a practitioner of stoicism and I believe it’s just not limited to work-life balance but in general living a balanced life. The goal in life is to define your ideal day, balanced with being present, focused action and fulfillment on an inner spiritual level. Right after college, It was engrained that I had to “prove my worth” for employer, and that meant working overtime, taking work home, and limiting the times I saw friends and family. As time progressed in my mid to late twenties, I realized what was important to me and that was finding the balance between my professional and personal life. Before I had kids, I had an easier time compartmentalizing home and work. For the most part, work stayed at work and home stayed at home. After I had my first child, I started to struggle with that concept. When I was at work, I had mixed emotions of pride in being a working Mom with guilt that I wasn’t home with my daughter for every laugh, roll and fall. When I started my first business, she was 6 months old and I felt more connected with her because when she needed me, I was there. Oof. Starting out strong with this question! Work life balance is something I think I’ll always struggle with. Art and designing has always been something I’ve loved doing, so when I eventually started my business the lines blurred between “hobby” and “work”. I do struggle with finding a hobby that isn’t attached to my business – most things don’t stick. Read more>>

Work – life balance as a self employed toddler momma is sometimes the biggest struggle for me. Being a fiber artist often feels more like a lifestyle and it can be difficult to turn work mode off when my busy season comes. Each of my items take time, most take a couple hours and some are worked over a couple of days. While it can get a bit overwhelming, I continue to push myself to stay focused and remind myself that hard work pays off! Read more>>
