We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaimie Medina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaimie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always prided myself on my work ethic. I always loved my job and made it a priority in my life to be successful at whatever I did. I worked for someone else my whole life and one day realized how much I brought to the table vs. how much I brought home. I think starting under someone else in my industry is crucial. You work with tons of wonderful people on different walks of life, you get to grow a clientele and learn so much about how the industry works. The ins and out of a beauty business. My thought was “ this is my next goal” to start my own. Keep moving up!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a cosmetologist who specializes in Waxing! I have been waxing for 6 years. I do anything from Full Body waxing to Lash Lifts and everything in between. I am a perfectionist and take great pride in providing great services with even better customer service. I take the time to get to know each and everyone of my clients, there lives all the way to how they love to look. We definitely become friends! Starting my own business wasn’t challenging in itself, it was getting the courage to leave the job I was at before. I have always been a loyal person and leaving a place you’d been at for 5 years definitely took a leap of faith! A roller coaster for sure. That’s where my support system played a big role in my jump. I have learned so much on my journey both working for myself and for someone else. You cannot please everyone! Sometimes you just need to roll with the punches and pick yourself back up and try again. One of the things I’m most proud and excited about is the fact that my first year of business on my own i made a profit. I worked really hard to make it a smooth transition for my clientele and didn’t get down when I had slow days. It’s so exciting seeing my business grow and gaining new clients along the way. The best part of my Career is making all people feel and look their best. It’s very rewarding and reminds me everyday why I do what I do!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting me for a week I would first take them to the best breakfast place in town, the Original Pancake House, they have the best coffee in Fort Collins! For lunch I’d take them to Water Course, the best vegan restaurant ever, located in Denver. The best vegan Cuban ever. I dream about it! For sight seeing there are so many places in Colorado to visit. I’d like to take them to a Colorado gem, Estes Park. A beautiful mountain town full of sites, good hiking, boutiques, and the best salt water taffy ever. In Loveland there is Sweet Heart Winery. A beautiful scenic space where you can enjoy an amazing glass of wine while sitting on the Big Thomason River. Wild animals pass through to grace you with their presence. I also love having some good ole fashion down time. Hanging out with a good chilled Colorado beer or wine while having good quality conversation and making a good home cooked meal., joking around and catching up on what we missed in each other’s lives. Overall good quality time with friends is the best!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A lot of my success could not have been done without the support of my family and friends and even the people who didn’t think cosmetology was a good career choice. I grew up with a single mom, it was just her and I. She always supported anything I wanted to do from sports to school etc. Mom always had my back no matter what. She believed in happiness being success on its own. My fiancé who I met towards the end of my schooling who has always been my rock and ear to listen when i needed it. My Friends who understood when I was working full time and doing night school to get my license. The ones I met in my industry who always pushed me to do better and held me up when things didn’t go my way. Then the ones who thought “you want to be a waxer?”. They really put the motivation behind me to prove to them that I could be successful in this. And here I am, killin it! I appreciate everyone one of them because I wouldn’t be here without them.
