We had the good fortune of connecting with Peter Katz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Peter, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe risk is a necessary evil in entrepreneurship. There is inherent risk in creating a new venture, but any good business person or entrepreneur will make sure the risks they take are calculated.

Starting a property management company on my own, with two children under 3, was the biggest financial and career risk I had made to date. I was at a point in my career that I felt I didn’t control my future to the extent that I desired. I was not creating wealth for my family and my retirement. The risk that I took translated into long hours and a lot of energy, but has been extremely rewarding from a financial and personal accomplishment standpoint.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe the biggest components of my success have been honesty and transparancy. I have received many referral clients due to our responsiveness and honesty. Mistakes happen and the best thing to do is own those mistakes and fix them. Learn from them and don’t make those mistakes again. Many property management companies quote a rate and then nickel and dime their clients with additional and hidden fees. I feel that no small fees tacked on here or there are going to make a difference in your success. Quote a fee and stick to it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take my friend up the I-70 corridor (NOT ON A WEEKEND) and wow them with some views. I would take them over Loveland Pass for a view of the continental divide. We would make our way to some amazing mountain bike ride like Vail Pass through the back bowls into Minturn, the great trails in Eagle or closer to our place in Avon, The Preserve. On our way back down, we would hit the Lawson Adventure park for some ziplining, Via Ferrata and rafting and then get some good food and beers at West Bound and Down or BBQ at Smokin’ Yards. Back in Denver, we would hit the cool new brewery, So Many Roads, to see their Grateful Dead museum and then definitely catch a show at Red Rocks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife largely supported us during grad school and the start-up of my business. Without her, things would have been really tight. I met a number of really smart and straightforward friends in grad school that I still speak to weekly. This network, more valuable than the education I received, has helped me numurous times when making business decisions.
