We had the good fortune of connecting with Keef Caben and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keef, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor is having a band, a team, to help reach out goals for success. Being a music artist means building a brand as unknown to household name without compromising who you really are.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Keef Caben is band made up of Keef Caben and Dayton Cade. We are electronic artists/producers from San Antonio, TX and who also are co-founding members of Undastreet Music Enhancement (UME). As a band, we have been bringing our fans Electronic-Breakbeat-Gritty sound that is simple but intense.

Keef has been active in the scene for 15 years and it started when he was home on Spring Break from Southwest Texas State University [Texas State] that he took an interest in what (current UME member) Dayton Cade was doing with his electronic instruments. Every available weekend since then Keef Caben learned everything he could from Dayton Cade and the rest is history.

After working with artists associated with UME and managing the day-to-day operations of UME (this role is how Keef became known as the Corporate Chief), it wasn’t until recently that Keef decided to create music for himself bringing Dayton Cade along to form a band. Keef Caben’s sound is electronic, but it’s also rock and a bit of funk.

As artist, we do not try to be different as much as we just want jam and groove however that may come about. There is a consistency to our sound through our driving drums tracks to the gritty organ synths/strings that have become a reoccurring sound for our writing process.

As an independent artists, the struggles are the same as with any independent business owner. The back and forth of time and resources is really the main obstacle in driving our success with consistency. We have learned to just enjoy the process and journey and be grateful for the outcome. We only like to bring positive vibes into the studio and writing process.

I think our story to the world would be that to be successful or take satisfaction in what you are doing, you must be self motivated, humble and bold. Everything you know you should do to move forward but don’t do, should annoy you. Accept your faults and be bold to make decision now that will make things better later on. Our music is our drive to be self motivated to get our music heard. Our music keeps us humble and honest as it lets us escape to reflect on how we want to feel sometimes and brings us back to the to those moments of happiness or sadness and anything in between. We can be wiser from these situation and reminded when when we play our music. And we have to be bold to do all of this with fear of failure.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I cannot speak for Dayton Cade but for me I would take them into my own house as family because friends are family. Most of our early supports we from friends and family.

I am outdoorsy kinda guy. We would prolly do some kayaking down the San Marcos River or hiking..I currently live in Martindale, Texas. Most likely enjoy the whole day on the river with food and drinks. Would definitely see what bands would be in town or what time of year it would be. Living so close to Austin, TX and depending time of the year, there can be some good shows to go to.

Especially during SXSW. Outside of that, I am pretty low key. I like to local pubs and Eateries. We most definitely check out any local brews. I dabble in home brewing beer and find enjoyable. It is like music making in that you can create different beers and ever know which one will be awesome.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think for me, it was not a book or one person that encouraged, supported or mentored that I can recognize. It was more of a moment that happened. During my college years, the home I grew up in got washed away in some floods. The whole experience gave a different perspective of time and how it is not a commodity. If I wanted to do the things that I wanted to do, I need to do them because anything and everything can be taken over night.
