We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Harden B.C.H. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I was 16 years old I was shot. the bullet left me less than a capable athlete. When I got older I used the methodology to recover and become a champion athlete. recognizing the incredible benefits of the holistic approach with the lack of health and wellness information provided to underserved communities, I wanted to fill that gap.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I founded a company called the National Bar League, which is an organization that showcases athletes from around the world competing in freestyle calisthenics. In doing this we build the popularity of the holistic benefits of calisthenics, helping to educate kids and adults in health and wellness practice they can impliment in their lives at no cost. Do this I have been able to start an initiative for the building of outdoor calisthenics parks providing free equipment to the people in underserved communities. Most notably our South Philly Park at Smith Playground. I got here from first being inspired by the athletes I came across on the internet over 10 years ago. I trained daily using only calisthenics until I eventually gained recognition as an athlete and a spokesperson for the sport.

There were many challenges in not only becoming an athlete but building enough recognition to start getting public fitness facilities built.

Some of the challenges included finding participants for building a park and spreading interest of the sport.

It took me 3 years of training before I was able to compete as an athlete myself and 3 years of pitching before a park was actually built. And what I learned was(much like training) it takes dedication, discipline, and perserverence to overcome all challenges that seem to be in your way in order to not only succeed but also grow.

When I was 16 years old I shot walkng home from the school. The built remained in my back sitting next to my spine. At 25 I learned the methods of calisthenics that not only helped overcome that injury but also display higher levels of functional strength such as handstand push-ups. Recongnizing the huge positive impact this sport had on my mind and body, I want to be able to share it with the world and help people achieve good health and wellness.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Me and my friends are pretty active, so we enjoy a good time that also keeps us moving. So having a day to bike through downtown Philly would be ideal on a nice day. Riding around the Museum is great during the day. Managing to make our way to South Philly’s italian market would be a great stop to check out some fresh fruits, there are also great mexican resturants. Towards the evening hangout out at Places such as Race St. Pier, Spruce St Harbour and Penn’s Landing are awesome spots to hangout at that sit along the river with plenty of places to relax and enjoy the sites. One of my favorite things to do is do archery at Callowhill Archery so we woud definitly have a stop there. For some good dancing and food Old City is fun area. Of course we would end off the week with a workout at the outdoor fitness park!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my parents for their love and support and my mentor and friend Marilyn who gave me the needed advice to turn my thoughts into real things.
