We had the good fortune of connecting with Emerson Lamm and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emerson, what principle do you value most?
Continuing to learn is the value I find to be most important to me. I am naturally drawn to trying to learn new skills and have new experiences. I find that I am not satisfied unless I am taking a class, reading about topics that interest me or trying something I have never done before. I feel like we are given such a limited amount of time on Earth, and I want to fill every moment with something new. I have talked with friends about how I often view my life as a big story that someone is sharing with someone many years in the future. I want that story to be filled with cool things I have done, places I have been, and a positive impact that I have made on people.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I play banjo and dobro in the Denver area and currently play the banjo for a Colorado bluegrass band, Brandywine and the Mighty Fines. While I had been introduced to music and played instruments growing up, I didn’t start seriously commit to learning an instrument until I was in my 20s. At the time, I realized I needed to have more creative outlets in my life and that I needed to expand and challenge myself more than what I had from my career alone. What I found learning a bluegrass instrument as an adult is that I had to challenge myself to accept being a novice again. I had to learn to be able to walk into a group of fantastic local musicians, introduce myself, set aside my ego, and be a beginner. All too often I feel as though we are afraid to be novices, and therefore forgo taking chances and trying things that will enrich and enhance their lives. I remembered the first few times I played music publicly, I was surprised how many people approached me asking how long I had been playing. When I told them that it had only been a few years, I felt like it was genuinely inspiring. I would encourage everyone to take risks when it comes to hobbies and activities and allow themselves to be vulnerable because you never know how much that hobby might change your life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in Colorado we have no shortage of cool places to see, and I would want to show them a little bit of everything. I can’t avoid thinking of this trip being any time other than in the spring, so that the day could revolve around a late season ski trip. While the snow might not be the best, I think the energy that everyone brings to spring skiing is all about playing and having fun, which matches my personality entirely. After a long day in the mountains, I would look for a brewery with great food and beer. I absolutely love that on any given night in any city in Colorado, you are likely to find a brewery with fantastic musicians playing, and it would be a perfect way to close out the night.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been so many people who encourage me and support me, but I would absolutely couldn’t do what I do without my wife, Delaney. I know I am the type of person who constantly is moving in a million different directions. I set crazy goals for myself and swing wildly with my interests, and she always supports everything I do. She tries to go to every gig that I play and listens to the same songs she has heard me play and practice over and over. She gives me constructive feedback, and doesn’t get tired of me playing the same phrase on 100 times in a row trying to get it right.
