We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Samuels and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I actually hadn’t planned on starting a business! I had little kids and loved taking their pictures. My husband bought me a “fancy” camera and my love of it grew from there. I had friends ask me if I would take their photos and it eventually grew into a business when they wanted to purchase prints and products. That was 12 years ago!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a portrait photographer. Over the years I have dabbled in a little of everything but eventually realized that I love the one on one contact with my clients. That’s why I chose to specialize in high school seniors, headshots and business branding. I love to hear about others dreams and goals and help make them come true.

I got here by doing years of research on marketing and social media, taking photography and editing courses that I could watch and absorb, by talking to other photographers and learning what works or doesn’t work for them, by hearing harsh criticism as well as compliments. Was it easy? Hahaha no, it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

I have learned that you don’t learn anything without failure. You get back up and try again.

I want my photography to be beautiful and affordable for all budgets.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like the small and quaint spots. I’d go up towards Morrison and Evergreen and find the hidden gem restaurants. We would have to go hiking of course and one of my favorite hiking spots is near Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s always awesome to see the wildlife and get those photos. We would then spend an afternoon wandering Estes Park and I might agree to a tour of the Stanley Hotel. I’m a big scaredy cat! I would also suggest going to Mount Princeton Hot Springs in Buena Vista. Who wouldn’t want to sit in the river and have a natural hot spring soothe all of those sore hiking muscles?! If they wanted a city vibe we would hit up a Rockies game and spend the day wandering Larimer square. I hear that there’s a beer spa in Denver somewhere. I’d love to check that out. For a more laid back city vibe, I love downtown Littleton. It’s great to walk main street, do some window shopping and stop in all of the cool, local spots. From the Alley to the Lazy Greyhound….. there are so many places.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Gosh, first off I’d love to thank my husband for always supporting, encouraging me and reminding me what is important. I also belong to a few women’s networking groups and I have met some amazing women that I have taught me so many important things when it comes to running a business; from taxes and paying bills to learning how to serve my clients and give them what they really need and want.
