We had the good fortune of connecting with Alastair Brogan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alastair, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Single malt Whisky has always been a passion to me and in Scotland you cant go more than 50 miles before you pass a Whisky Distillery and you cant go to someone’s house without being offered a whiskey.

When I moved from Scotland with my wife and 2 young children I started making American Single Malt Whiskey Distillery really as a hobby , who was I kidding.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I never passed an art exam in school , played an instrument and all the sports I became good at were based on size and strength rather than skill and creativity. However, I always loved tastes and smells and that developed with my love for food and whiskey. As some of my school classmates pursued the arts my career took me in other directions, and it was only when I got older did pursue distilling . Everyone is creative in some way and I have found it in making Whiskey .

Although the whiskeys I produce are born out of tradition, as a craft distiller I have freedom to create something different. , something the large distilleries are resistant to do. American Single malt Whiskey is in its infancy in the US and Boulder Spirits has a very unique flavor profile and with expressions never seen in the US before , think Peated Malted Barley finished in Sherry casks and New Oak.

Boulder Bourbon has a combination of grains that changes the way some people think of traditional Bourbon. I am not alone in creating the exciting flavors coming from the 2500 craft distilleries in the US but I am intensely proud of what we are doing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a pretty pertinent question as I have 3 University friends visiting me from Scotland and N.Carolina for a few days so I want to show them a good time with a mix of touristy things and casual dining.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Distilling Whisky is now my third career. My decisions and where I am today would have looked very different if it wasn’t for the hundreds of people, past and present that have been part of my life.

My parents allowed me to be who I wanted to be and supported me through disappointments and successes while my wife continues to support me every day. The 10 years I spent in the military and the people, places and events I experienced runs deep in who I am and the values that I try to enact each day and pass to my children.
