We had the good fortune of connecting with Jared Alexander Masters and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jared Alexander, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I was juggling a lot before I decided to focus full time on my production and songwriting. I was cmo of a multi million dollar business, I was a creative advisor for companies as well, we had a new baby, traveling, but I was writing and producing daily. I asked myself at one point, why am I putting so much time and energy into other peoples businesses and feel empty afterwards? Why have I not given myself the chance to pursue a career in songwriting? The answer was I was scared of failure. Scared of losing a stable income. It wasn’t that I didn’t think I could do it, it was just the fear of major change and excepting that I am a artist, and my art is what drives me. My wife and I came to an agreement that I should fully focus on it., she’s been my biggest cheer leader in the process, with out her support it would definitely be impossible. I spend 2 – 6 hours a day writing / composing / producing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
People have unlimited options when it comes to music. It’s extremely accessible to hear what ever you want now. Artists have more power now, they can independently grow and release music like never before. I took a path less traveled with my releases. I write and produce in many genres, so I’ve created a system where I dedicate songs in specific genres or feels to certain projects. I have 4 separate projects of my own right now. Sounds batshit crazy but there’s a reason.

The Illies is my longest running project, a live band, reggae, dub, ska. blues, r & b.,

Obermeister: Dj’ing under this name, releasing electronic / house singles.

Jared Masters: Singer songwriter albums, this is where I built a lot of my catalog before splitting it into separate projects. I also score commercials / films under Jared Masters.

Lastly, The Blur: Synth pop / wave / indie alternative. I collect and love synthesizers. This is my project I focus my specific synth inspired sound to.

It’s madness, but it really allows me zoom in on the genres I’m passionate about and maybe find a fan base I wouldn’t have found if they were all jumbled under one name.

The success I’m having is purely creative at the moment. I’ve been successful at seeing through projects from conception to release.

Being a serial entrepreneur, im finally treating these alias’s as businesses. But I treat them in a way where the magic doesn’t get sucked out of my creative processes. I allow myself time to write and then set up a calendar to finish the best ideas. I am finally working towards applying all of my business know how to my art. It’s a hard line to walk. But to gain any type of measurable success in todays music industry you have to have “it all”.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have 3 places I consider home.

LA: If we’d have a cheap breakfast and bloody marys at whalers in Venice Beach, walk abbot Kinney in the afternoon then do wine & dinner at Barrique in Santa Monica.

North Bay: Would stay at Bodega Bay Lodge, breakfast and dinner at Drakes, bike to beach. never leave. The grounds are beautiful.

Southern Oregon: Breakfast at mamosas, go swim at Shan creek, then wine tour Applegate Valley, stop at Cowhorn vineyard last, then swim in Applegate lake. or do wine + float down the Applegate river. Option 2. Drive to Brookings OR, stop at smith river to swim, paddle board the chetco river, eat lunch at Zolas on the water, sunset at natural bridges or Harrison beach.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A combination of people. My wife as I mentioned. Having a partner who is supportive, realistic, trusting, and driven as I am has been the most important factor. In my circle I have Emily Turner, another songwriter who is a major influence and support in my life. Michael Morgan, a friend and mentor. He’s introduced me to some really incredible concepts about the self and creativity. Would like to shout out Live with Matt Rad and Jon Castelli. These two guys have gone live on IG for the past few years and have high level conversations about mixing songwriting and producing for an hour every week. Really helped me grow in my production and work flow.
