We had the good fortune of connecting with Patience Elkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patience, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
The one piece of advice that I don’t agree with but unfortunately receive often is, “ Just take it slow”. I am a strong believer in, go big or go home, time is of the essence and strike while the iron is hot. In the words of Pablo Picasso, “Action is the foundational key to all success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Pure Patience Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower marginalized communities to navigate through and beyond cancer. We provide education, mammography services and supportive care through offering resources that meet the uniqueness of the BIPOC population. I am most proud of our community involvement. We are working hard to purchase our own mobile mammography vehicle to bring breast cancer screening services to underserved and under resourced communities. In September, 2022, we hosted a community health fair featuring free health screenings and Covid-19 vaccinations, as well as information about breast cancer,. We also provided subsidized mammograms for those in need. The Health fair included entertainment, food and fun for all.
The success of Pure Patience Cancer Foundation has required a lot of hard work. We have overcome many obstacles that have come our way thru hard work, shear determination and because we love what we do.
The lesson I’ve learned along the way, is to not let nay sayers stomp on my vision.
I want the world to know that Pure Patience Cancer Foundation is dedicated to making the lives of those effected by the devastating effects of cancer better. We are passionate about the work that we do and will not stop working to eradicate the world of cancer.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would show them the rich culture and history of African-Americans in Denver, Colorado. We would take of a tour of the historic Five Points neighborhood and I would definitely show them the house, high school and neighborhood I grew up in, which is the Montbello neighborhood. We would eat at Mimosas restaurant as well as Las Delicias and of course a visit to Denver would not be a visit without a trip to the mountains.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to two important women in my life. My mother Wendy Forslund, who taught me to be a strong black women who never stops reaching for the stars and my daughter Jordan McClendon, for her unconditional love and support. I cannot leave out the board members of Pure Patience Cancer Foundation as well as countless family and friends. Without their efforts, patience and encouragement, I would not be where I am today.
