We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Bones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jake, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
There is no feeling like discovering a new band, or just a song that makes you stop whatever you are doing and just sit there, fully listening, absolutely hooked by what you are hearing. I’m such a huge fan of music as a whole, but particularly artists that are innovating and breaking through to new sounds and styles of performing. It’s the kind of feeling that pushes you to do things differently, like starting your own record label just to build a community of unique artists. I guess the only feeling that might top that is the energy of a live crowd fully immersed in the music you’re playing.

I also truly love cooking, the flow of it, the smells, and the immediate satisfaction of getting to taste what you’ve made. It does remind me a little bit of mixing in music production. They both are an art of blending different ingredients together to create something greater than their individual parts.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a multifaceted artist (as many artists are), but everything I have done in my art career traces back to my love of music and my DIY mindset. I’m especially proud of making it as far as I have without any formal education in art or otherwise. I’ve learned and honed my skills purely through experimentation and self-education. Songwriting and music production are my two deepest loves about my craft, and skills that I know I will never stop refining. I have been a designer for over a decade as well, which started with designing my own band logos and merchandise from a pretty young age. It has never been easy, I have lived below the poverty line my entire adult life, sometimes relying on assistance programs and help from friends and family to stay afloat. The biggest thing I’ve learned from the roller coaster ride of my career has been to never forget the love and support of your fans, friends, and supporters.
Dision Records is a community of artists and music lovers here to bring out the weird and unique in Denver’s underground music scene.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So first up, we gotta hit the mountains. Nothing can beat the majesty of nature! If it’s summer, Wellington Lake is my go to for paddleboarding, camping, or having a cookout. In the winter, Sunlight Mountain Resort in Glenwood Springs is the best local ski mountain I’ve ever been too. Not the biggest or most beautiful, but the best in vibes and community. Obviously, live music has to be next. Venues I dig include 7th Circle Music Collective, HQ, Hi-Dive, The Marquis, and of course the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater.
And since I’m a big metalhead, and Denver is a metal city, Trve Brewing, Black Sky Brewery, and the Brutal Poodle are great hangout spots for headbangers.
I’m a lifelong vegetarian so some of my favorite restaurants I would bring someone to would be So Radish in Arvada, City ‘O City, and Sputnik.
And to top off this hypothetical bender I’d have to hit MILK bar in Denver for the 80’s and goth beats down in the basement.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely would like to shout out Emerald Boes and her dark art brand Horrid. Her drive and passion for art and community heavily inspired me. I wanted to bring the level of energy and dedication to my own field and I don’t think I ever would have done it without her guidance and encouragement.
