We had the good fortune of connecting with Amie Bennight & Julie Megahan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amie Bennight &, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
In a world that feels ‘full of crazy’ right now, being a small business owner has been a challenge. Certainly any business is challenging during a pandemic and societal shutdown, but small and local relies on fewer and less plentiful resources. As part of a plan to stay alive, we had to rethink how we buy and sell and especially how we stay in touch with new and loyal customers. Online and social media sales remained steady as we offered and promoted free, curbside and safe delivery. We figured the market would tell us as we moved along, and we would know if it worked or didn’t. It did. We are still here. In person events and markets have diminished for the time being, but we are hopeful as we look to the future for opportunities. We have continued to share our love of fashion and partnership through shared spaces. Specifically we have small retail storefronts inside a salon and home decor venue that have existing traffic and bring additional traffic through. Rules and obstacles with social distancing have limited that traffic but again, we are hopeful!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Julie and I started the business with an idea and a dream of what it could be. More than three years later, the dream looks quite different but it’s still ours. It’s a separate entity that we both created together – like offspring, maintaining individual characteristics from both of us but still unique. We have learned to recognize each other’s strengths and weaknesses, we all have them. We have learned to communicate more than we think we need to. We were never motivated by financial gain. That was an exciting aspect of success, but also a stressful reality when there is none. I think we both have to love it enough to do what it takes for the best possible outcome. So here we are, joined together on a mission to continue to bring fashion trends to women of all ages, any shape or size, on location, online or in person. It’s a wild ride!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
North Colorado Springs. Historical Downtown Monument is a treat for any visitor who wants to eat, shop and play. Scenic views and patios, farmers markets, local delis and cafes and small boutique businesses give the area so much charm. South Colorado Springs. Old Colorado City is snuggled in between downtown Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs and offers a unique strip of art, architecture, dining, shopping and local fare. It’s rare to find the streets bare in any season.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We undeniably give credit to our friends and family who support us emotionally and practically in the small, local business arena. Many of them are small business owners themselves. We band together to build each other up. Together we have so much more to offer. Jen Sheriff, Owner of Splendeur Salon In Old Colorado City, and Lindsay Kawakami, Owner of Lindsay’s Cottage in downtown Monument are partners without whom we simply couldn’t survive. We work together to create experiences and ideas that help each other grow and do more. Events, marketing campaigns, advertising, promotions and customer appreciation are all a part of that effort. Strong, powerful women can fuel immeasurable possibility together. That energy is addictive, contagious and so very fulfilling.
