Meet Jordan Dunbar | Professional Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Dunbar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I think for me it started off as an outlet. I loved creating something new and different and it just grew from there. In the beginning I used to just take the photo, family portraits, senior photos, then I saw something and it just clicked for me, literally. My friend and I were in a laundry mat shooting some portraits and we started trying some crazy angles and even getting in the laundry baskets. My mind just started racing with ideas. We did a shoot every day for the next week. It was fun and exciting. From then on I truly focused on conceptual art. Trying to find different perspectives and angles.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After high school I traveled and worked for two years. While traveling I found my love for photography and I just knew that’s what I wanted to do. I went to college in Georgia and received my associates degree in applied science, photography. My two professors were always so helpful and encouraging, Melissa Henderson and Jim Loring. They made me feel confident in my work. I consider my art to be conceptual and surreal. I love making people think when they look at my photos. After college I began photographing weddings and truly enjoyed that. I traveled and lived in Beaufort, South Carolina where I met the love of my life Nikolas Beachy and we moved to Virginia his home town. Then we made our way to Kansas and Colorado. All throughout this time I still shot weddings and photoshoots. My art is my passion, it is different and dark but beautiful and surreal. I love what I do. I hope one day to have a gallery and be able to sell my prints.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take then to Garden of the Gods where you would find the most beautiful views and easy reasonable hikes. I would also take them to Bird Tree Cafe for a honey cinnamon latte. Then I would take them shopping in Eclectic Co right beside Bird Tree Cafe. I would then take them to the Manitou Cliff Dwellings to explore the Pueblaon ruins. I would then make our way over to The Great Sand Dunes National Park where we would do a photoshoot on dunes and enjoy the views.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my mother, Charlene Dunbar. She always pushed me to try something new, think outside the box in every situation you can. She was different and she wanted to make sure I knew it was okay to be different too. That I didn’t need to be like everyone else. To have your own opinions, your own likes and dislikes. From an early age she always had my sister and I traveling, we stayed in Mexico and Trinidad. She even took me to Malawi, Africa to help build a well and school for a small village. She wanted to make sure that I knew any dream was possible if you tried. When I wanted to chase my dreams in photography, she was right behind me encouraging me. And celebrating my achievements. My father, Eric Dunbar also always encouraged me. He always pushed me to try my hardest and not give up. He always told me it would be hard but if it was easy that everyone would do it.
