We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonathan, what’s your definition for success?
Success at its very core is two sides at war with itself. Personal success, the threshold you set for yourself in what it means to have achieved the desired outcome; and success as a social construct, ever redefined by the environment. To me, success is entirely objective. You can do poorly on a test, but if you studied diligently and gave good effort you could still feel you were successful in your approach. In my creative endeavors I find success in what makes me happy, what challenges me, and what scares me. If I compared every photograph I take to others I see, I will always find flaws and perhaps think “my photos aren’t this good”. This train of thought allows society, and myself to dictate the threshold of my success. The bar can’t always be at the same height either; some days just getting out there and taking some shots is a success, even if none of them come out the way I want.. Don’t let “success” define the value of something that makes you happy, take stock in every victory and learn from each failure; let each failure lead to your next success!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a photographer I find beauty in reality. A single image captures the atmosphere and mood of the surroundings, the body language of the subjects, the focus that drew the artist’s attention. I strive to pull this concept into my work by producing thought provoking and powerful images. When I work with people I like to capture the realest and most candid moments. When I’m working with nature I like to capture the subtleties that make this world beautiful. The difficulty in the venture is not easy to define. Sure there was some practice and learning that went into using my equipment, and I still learn every time I use it – but the largest challenge was finding where I fit in the saturated environment of photography. I may not have that “niche” to set me apart but I see every happy customer and every preserved memory as a personal victory.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This would easily have to be a tour of quaint mountain towns through the state. Mountains capes are my favorite and the small communities they host have some of the best local shops and restaurants. Spending quality time catching up and enjoying each persons company is my idea of a good trip.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends and family are my rock. With their support and candor I have a reliable resource to bounce ideas off of and receive criticism.
