We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Hastad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The amount of science and control that goes into the process of making beer. If your temperature control is off even a few degrees throughout various stages of making beer, you end up with an entirely different end product in terms of flavor, mouthfeel, and alcohol content.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I come from a banking and medical background. What I loved about the beer business was how immersive it is in terms of business, science, and history. What started off as a hobby, quickly became an obsession and snowballed from there. Looking back, my biggest challenge personally was finding creative ways of funding the dream when I started out with so little personal finances. After many years of hearing no, or hearing “we’ll fund you if you change X”, to finally find the right group of people who believed in the dream was insanely satisfying. I think what I’d like the world to know about Remedy is our undying dedication to creating fantastic brews AND fantastic experiences. Beer is culture, and having the proper place, people, and supporting cast to enjoy it are crucial.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely say Remedy! I love Sioux Falls’ downtown. It is walkable, beautiful, and always brimming with life. Whether it’s breakfast at the Diner, lunch at a myriad of wonderful places, local drinks at our breweries or distilleries, or dancing at some of the clubs, you’ll always find a good place. In the nicer months, there are a ton of outdoor festivals with music, food trucks, and events galore. So for me, just wandering and deciding as I go is a great way to enjoy it.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and co-workers. Without their belief and support I never would have taken the plunge in opening our business, and never would have had the guts to stick it out through the tough times.
