We had the good fortune of connecting with Althea Hrdlichka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Althea, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Being a business owner/entrepreneur was just in my blood. From my Greek grandfather coming over from Greece, to my mom starting and owning multiple businesses. I learned from a young age how to create a masterpiece and love what you while doing so, you have to create it yourself, the way you see fit. Starting my particular business really called me to it, not me to it. So I just followed my calling!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Well to start, I actually have a number of businesses. I call myself a serial entrepreneur. My main business is a free standing birth center (prenatal care and homebirths and birth center births not associated with or in the hospital). But I am different than all the other birth centers in Colorado. We have what I call a homebirth model. True midwifery model that includes up to an hour apts,, home visits after baby is born that includes 4-5 postpartum visits, and we take care of both mom and baby up until 6 weeks postpartum. So….much….support.
My other businesses are smaller but compliment main main one. I have an herbal tea company for Women’s health (Mother’s Life Tea) and a rental space (A Social Place) that we rent out to the community for classes, business meetings, parties, baby showers, etc.
Starting businesses are never easy, but always a thrill and super enjoyable for me! Overcoming challenges is just in my DNA. I pull from the right resources, do my research, and surround myself with great people to keep moving forward.
What I’ve learned the most is that I’m a visionary through and through, and that it’s extremely important to have an “integrater” by my side to help keep me in the smaller details. Teamwork is the best work!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, Jessup Farms is the best place (which is where we are located). It’s an attic Ian market that has a great coffee shop, Bindle, great shopping, yummy restaurants, and to top it off, Josh and John’s ice cream! Then we have some great trials throughout the city to walk on and just enjoy nature.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
If it weren’t for my husband and my kids support, this would never have been possible. Thank you for understanding and giving me grace for all the nights I haven’t come home, the times I’m at the office til midnight, and the times I’ve had to miss important days to serve the community instead of being with you all. God knows it’s been hard, so thank you for having my back and loving me anyways despite the times I’ve been unable to be present.
