We had the good fortune of connecting with Tonoa Manuel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tonoa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business was a result of a thoughtful and iterative process. After pivoting and repositioning three times, the driving force behind this decision was rooted in the core philosophy of becoming a better version of oneself. At SIYG Consulting Firm, we recognize that establishing a deep connection with your business begins with gaining clarity about your identity and the path you intend to follow.

My thought process revolves around the belief that personal growth is the foundation for business advancement. We are committed to guiding individuals on their journey of self-improvement because we understand that becoming a better version of oneself is the catalyst for progress in the business world. Each pivot and repositioning was a step towards refining our mission and approach, aligning them more closely with our values and the vision we have for both personal and business growth. The journey has been intentional, marked by a commitment to continuous improvement and a deep understanding of the symbiotic relationship between personal development and business success.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the proud owner of a black women-owned business, holding four city certifications (MWBE, EBE, SBE, and DBE). Armed with three degrees and a Design Thinking certification from the Amsterdam DT Headquarters, I embarked on this entrepreneurial journey while juggling a full-time job for the initial 4.5 years, transitioning to full-time entrepreneurship two years ago. As a mother of three and a devoted wife, I prioritize the fusion of family and business values.

This journey has been anything but easy, yet I recognize that this path was uniquely crafted for me, a fact I do not take lightly. Today, as I continue to grow, each year unfolds as a more amazing chapter in my authentic business journey. The ability to care for what matters most to me propels me forward, reinforcing my commitment to embracing and owning every aspect of my entrepreneurial experience. Acknowledging the significance of having a supportive “CRU” (Circle of Respected Uplifters), those who see, motivate, and push me daily without hesitation, has been a crucial realization on this journey. A “CRU” is a special form of influence—a gift from the universe, indescribable yet fiercely cherished. I want the world to understand that it’s okay to challenge the status quo, standing firmly in your vulnerable truth to achieve your goals, even when the world may harbor doubts.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For an unforgettable week-long adventure in Colorado with my best friend, I’d craft a journey that harmonizes the thrill of the outdoors, the cultural beats of the city, and the delights of fine wine. Our escapade would commence with a scenic drive to Lake Dillon, where we’d indulge in a lakeside picnic and revel in the breathtaking mountain views. The following day, we’d embrace the vibrant city life with brunch at Postinos, followed by an exploration of the art scene in RiNo and a visit to the Denver Art Museum. Evenings would be a delightful blend of jazz, brews, and camaraderie at Spangalang Brewery’s Friday Night Jazz. Midweek would beckon us to the charming town of Golden, offering a taste of local wines at Bonacquisti Wine Company and an immersive experience at Lookout Mountain. A dinner affair at LaLomas would round off the day. As the weekend approaches, we’d embark on a short road trip to Estes Park, savoring craft beers at Rock Cut Brewing Company and immersing ourselves in the serene beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. Our final evening would be a nostalgic return to the city, relishing the diverse culinary delights of Welton Street Cafe in the historic Five Points neighborhood. Throughout the week, we’d discover the multifaceted charm of Colorado, from mountainous landscapes to urban vibrancy, creating memories that linger with the magic of wine, jazz, and the great outdoors.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In the profound journey of entrepreneurship, there are pivotal figures who stand as pillars of strength and unwavering support. For me, my husband, Montonzo Manuel, and my best friend, Ajay Kyle, are the invaluable cornerstones that have shaped this expedition. Montonzo has been a constant presence, offering not just love but the necessary push to surmount adversities. His role extended beyond mere encouragement; he provided the hard “no’s” that were crucial milestones on this transformative journey. His support has been unwavering, akin to a cup continually filled with resilience and belief. Ajay, my bestie, brings an unparalleled ease to both business and life. She seamlessly integrates into the intricacies of entrepreneurship, serving as a sounding board when life throws its curveballs. Ajay’s voice resonates with a perfect blend of love and unfiltered reality, a compass guiding through the tumultuous seas of both professional and personal realms. These two individuals are more than just allies; they constitute my “cru,” a crew that navigates the challenges and triumphs side by side. Their influence on the trajectory of my business is immeasurable, and my gratitude for their presence is boundless.

A heartfelt shoutout also goes to my kiddos, Autumn, MJ, and BrookLynn, who keeps me moving forward. They are the driving force behind my dedication to legacy-building, a commitment that holds the potential to change the world.
I extend my appreciation to my sister, brothers, parents, in-laws, the 22′ ULFC Cohort, and the entire “framily” – friends who are family – that fuels my momentum in this transformative work. Together, this collective support forms the foundation upon which I build not just a business but a legacy that transcends individual endeavors.
