We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cameron, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Working for myself has been a gradual shift over the years. I slowly started realizing that I work better for myself than for someone else. There is an immense pride I feel knowing that I’ve built this business and that it supports me and my family. I also wanted to make money doing something creative, and once I picked up a camera, there was no turning back. So, it’s been a mix of passion and purpose.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is incredibly inspired by my love of music and films. I connect with my couples on their love of music, and I think of ways to incorporate their favorite song/artist into their photos or films. This could be as simple as creating a playlist for their engagement session, all the way through what type of music I choose for their wedding film.
The journey to where I am today wasn’t a smooth ride, but it’s been rewarding. In a sea of people claiming to be good ‘educators’, it’s hard to find the good ones. A bit of common sense and self-awareness has helped me find those who genuinely want to help others and are also good at the art of photography. Throughout the journey I’ve learned the importance of a genuine connection with clients, as well as how important patience and adaptibility is.
I’d love the world to know that I love the art of storytelling in visual and audio form. I want to be known as the photographer who truly gets to know his clients so that he can deliver a unique experience and one-of-a-kind photos and films. To be selected to document one of the most important days in someone’s life is a high honor, and I hope that through my work it shows that I’m very appreciative of that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So many great places in Denver and the surrounding areas, so I’ll try to categorize them a bit.
We’d of course need to get coffee every day, so I’d take them around to all of the best coffee spots, like Corvus, Jubilee, Huckleberry, etc.
For food, we’d definitely check out Grillin’ Wings & Things or some Ethiopian food.
If there is a good concert happening that week, we’d attend that, hopefully at Summit Music Hall, the Fillmore Auditorium, or The Marquis Theater.
Depending on the time of year, I’d love to show them the Denver Botanic Gardens, and we’d probably visit the Museum of Nature & Science as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a very strong support system behind me and my passions. My mom was the biggest supporter of everything I did, no matter what it was. From childhood into adulthood, she gave me the permission to be myself and realize my dreams. That played a huge part in how I got here today. My wife has also been extremely supportive in everything I do. Professionally, I owe a lot to Sam Hurd, whose workshops and ongoing Patreon content has helped guide me through the process of running a photography business.
