We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle Woodward and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyle, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
It’s simple. No risk, no reward! Starting Woody’s Q Shack was a major risk as Colorado isn’t known for BBQ. It took several years for people to realize that they can get world class BBQ in Colorado!

What should our readers know about your business?
Our story started back in 2012, when Michelle bought Kyle a smoker for Christmas. Kyle and his late father, Jeff, found a shared love for barbecue and enjoyed feeding family and friends delicious barbecue that would “make you rare up, snort, and run your horn in the ground.”

This hobby became a passion when we entered the competition world. Throughout the years, Woody’s Q Shack has earned many awards on the KCBS circuit including Grand Champions of the 2018 SLV Beat the Heat BBQ competition, and we placed in the top one percent of the 465 teams at the 2018 American Royal, aka The World Series of Barbecue!

Our passion later became a family-run catering business then quickly expanded into a successful food truck, and now we are a full brick-and-mortar restaurant! It is our mission to cook never half-assed, championship winning barbecue in a super casual family atmosphere.

We’ve built our business by believing in faith, family, the product, the staff, customers, restaurant environment, our community, being the best, doing the best, staying humble, and continuing to grow. .

Thousands of miles on the road and tireless hours of cooking later, we are now one of Colorado’s best BBQ restaurants and top competition teams.

Today, Woody’s Q Shack includes a dine-in & take away restaurant, special-event catering for up 2,500 people, training events to learn how to make your own BBQ and, of course, we are still on the road several times each year competing with and learning from the world’s best pitmasters.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Fly fishing on the Conejos river is a must. Of course you have to visit the Great Sand Dunes as well. After a long day of fishing or visiting the Sand Dunes, a stop at the Hooper Pool to wind down is always a great way to end the day.

For meals, I would start off by going to the Campus Cafe for breakfast. Woody’s Q Shack for lunch and then Nino’s Mexican Restaurant for breakfast. For a mid day pickup, a coffee at Roots by Blessed is a can’t miss.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife Michelle. My two boys, Dyson (18) and Keenon (16). My mom, Melanie. My late father, Jeff!
