We had the good fortune of connecting with Kara O’Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kara, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my own business because I had struggled for years in jobs that I was unhappy in. I never felt accomplished at the end of the day even if I was great at the job. It was never my passion or calling. I took the risk of leaving the 9-5 and jumping with both feet into my own business. Although there are daily struggles of having my own business, I know this is what I am meant to do. I am passionate about music and songwriting and feel like I can help others as well.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started singing as a little girl and knew performing was something I loved to do. I was set on a path of the societal expectation of college degree, 9-5 job, etc. Although I did graduate college, I eventually found out what I truly wanted to do later in life. I tried many different jobs and did what society or other told me to do. Unhappiness was all I got out of it. I started going to open mics to get comfortable performing. Years later and a lot of self growth, I started my music business. Making the website live was huge!

The biggest challenge I face is myself. There are many people out there who want me to fail, so they can be right, but I am the one who gets to decide if I fail or succeed. I have learned I can’t share my path with everyone and to surround myself with like minded entrepreneurs to get the support I need. People are constantly telling me to find another job but I continue to work this journey. It is not easy and does not happen over night. My success has grown each year and I plan on taking it all the way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Alamo Drafthouse- I love movies and they have the best food and service! The atmosphere is great!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My partner and future husband has been so supportive in my entrepreneur journey. His love and support has allowed me to feel confident and keep reaching for my dreams. He is at nearly every show and has been my roadie, photographer, sound engineer, therapist and so much more. He supports me and wants nothing more than for me to succeed in what I want. This is so important, as many may want you to succeed, but only in what they want.
