We had the good fortune of connecting with Makayla Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Makayla, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am originally from Christiansburg, Virginia, a place that has profoundly shaped who I am today. Growing up, I was involved in various sports and activities, including softball, cheerleading, choir, youth group, theatre and, swimming. These experiences not only kept me physically active but also instilled in me a love for dedication, teamwork, and discipline.

My parents played a crucial role in my upbringing. They consistently encouraged and pushed me to be the best version of myself. I remember growing up, I had to complete all of my homework before I was allowed to go outside to play. This upbringing instilled in me a strong work ethic and the resilience to persevere through challenges – something I still carry with me today.

Thanks to the grit and determination I developed early on, I am now a middle school teacher shaping young minds about the business world. Additionally, I own a photography business, allowing me to explore my creative passions. I still have a strong love of sports and am currently a semi-professional women’s tackle football player for the Utah Falconz.

Each of these roles requires a blend of dedication, hard work, and the ability to push through adversity—qualities that were instilled in me at a young age. My background has not only influenced my career choices but also has shaped me into the person I am today and will continue to inspire the way I teach, encouraging my students to strive for excellence and to never shy away from challenges. With a little bit of hard work and determination, anything is possible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that what truly sets me apart is my grit, hard work, and determination. These qualities are not just words to me; they are a way of life that has shaped who I am and continues to drive me forward. Resilience is something that defines my character and my approach to both life and work.

The aspect of life that excites me the most is the promise of the future. While I live each day to its fullest because tomorrow is never promised, the anticipation of new challenges, learning opportunities, and the potential for growth fills me with energy.

My professional path has been anything but straightforward. Rooted in the challenges I’ve faced, from personal struggles to professional setbacks, each phase of my life has contributed to where I am today. This eventually led me to my current position as a middle school teacher, where I engage with students teaching them about the business world.

Parallel to my educational career, I embraced my entrepreneurial spirit and started my own photography business, Memories by Mak. This venture not only reflects my creative side but also my courage to take risks and not being afraid to fail.

Every challenge or hardship that you go through can teach you valuable lessons. The key takeaways for me have been:

Never give up: Persistence is the cornerstone of success.

Embrace failure: It is not a setback but a setup for a comeback.

Stay positive: A smile can be your greatest weapon during tough times.

What I want the world to know about me—about my brand and my story—is that authenticity and resilience can coexist with success and fulfillment. My life is a testament to the fact that one can achieve their dreams through relentless perseverance and a positive outlook.

I am Makayla Brown, a teacher, an entrepreneur, and, above all, a lifelong learner and fighter. My story is still being written, and I invite everyone to learn from it and perhaps see a bit of themselves in the twists and turns of my journey.

As I look towards the future, my goal remains to inspire those around me, be it through teaching, photography, or simply living by example. I hope to continue making a meaningful impact, one student, one photograph, and one day at a time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have only been in Utah for about two years, however I have found a few favorites. I would definitely take them to Slackwater for some of the best pizza I have ever had – the Hot Honey DP is a must! After an early dinner at Slackwater, we would definitely go to an Utah Jazz game. Sports fan or not the Jazz games are always a fun time with their electric atmosphere. Exploring downtown Salt Lake City is a must if you are visiting Utah. Starting with the Utah Capitol building for the stunning views – this is also one of my favorite photography places. The Gateway, a fun and dynamic area of SLC with cool artwork, fun and inviting atmosphere – also has the prettiest lights around the Holidays. I would also go to Keys on Main a lively piano bar on Main Street. Another, must do for the week would be visiting the Daybreak area. The Daybreak community is stunning with the lake, trails and downtown area. While in Daybreak we would grab lunch at The Break a local sports bar – the sweet potato fries and fry sauce are to die for. Throughout the week I would definitely take them to Park City a slightly different feel of Utah. The views in Park City are beyond stunning. After sight seeing, we would go to lunch at the Loco Lizard Catina, I would definitely recommend their Enchiladas Suizas. If we were craving a late night snack, I would stop by In-N-Out for a late night burger, fries and a shake. Coming from a small town in Virginia, In-N-Out was the first place I visited when arriving to Utah because all of my west coast friends raved about how great it was. I have to say, I was not disappointed! Utah has SO many hidden gems, these are just a few of my favorites. I am still continuing to learn and explore the beautiful state of Utah.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, my incredible parents – thank you for always pushing me to be the best verision of myself and never allowing me to quit. Your support has been my backbone, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without your love and encouragement.

To my fiancé, you are truly my rock. Not only do you accompany me at all my photoshoots as my assistant but you also support me in all that I do. Your unwavering support and companionship mean the world to me. You are truly my best friend and I couldn’t imagine this journey without you by my side.

A big shout out to the Utah Falconz too! Joining this team has given me a community and connections that have truly enriched my life since I moved here two years ago. Thanks for welcoming me with open arms and making Utah feel like home.

And how could I forget my work family? I wouldn’t be half the educator I am without your constant guidance and support.

Lastly, to all my students – you are the reason my days are filled with joy and entertainment. There’s never a dull moment with you all, and I cherish every laugh and learning moment we share.
