Meet Sarah Bennett | Healthcare Quality Professional & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Bennett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to thinking about risk, I’m guided by the motto: “It’s never too late.” This philosophy has deeply influenced my approach to both my personal life and my career. I believe that embracing risk is not just about seeking out big, bold opportunities; it’s about staying open to new challenges and learning experiences at any stage in life.
In my own journey, this mindset was particularly significant when I decided to pursue my art career later in life. Initially, I grappled with self-doubt—wondering if I was too old or too busy to start something new. However, I came to realize that these were merely mental obstacles I could overcome. By taking the leap and stepping into this new chapter, I found that the risk was not only manageable but also incredibly rewarding.
One of my favorite sayings is, “You only miss the shots you don’t take.” This resonates deeply with me. Whether it’s submitting artwork to shows, entering competitions, or simply trying out a new creative approach, the worst that can happen is a missed opportunity—and that’s something I’d rather risk than wonder “what if.”
Risk has played a crucial role in my career development. It has pushed me to challenge my comfort zone, try new things, and remain resilient in the face of setbacks. I often hear people say they’re waiting for the “right time” or that they’re not ready yet, but from my experience, there’s no better time than now to take a risk and pursue what excites you.
So, when I think about risk, I see it as an essential ingredient in the recipe for growth and fulfillment. This applies to my day job in healthcare where I worked my way up the ladder and was the first in my family to graduate from college (granted when I turned 40) to pursuing an art career when I did not nurture any artistic talent until I was also 40!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey into the realm of art began unexpectedly in 2021, a turning point sparked by an accident that left me confined to a slower pace of life.
Before then, I never imagined myself as an artist. Amidst the whirlwind of being a devoted wife, mother, and full-time professional, the idea of nurturing a creative side seemed unlikely.
During recovery I found a need for a creative outlet. It started with a simple bunny drawn from my daughter’s art supplies—a humble beginning that blossomed into a profound passion. I delved into online tutorials, to learn the fundamentals of drawing until I found myself enamored with the art of realism.
Today, I devote time almost daily to my art, and I am endlessly grateful for the unexpected journey that led me here. My business title The Unexpected Artist is not merely a moniker; it’s a testament to the astonishment shared by both myself and those closest to me.
My favorite mediums are Scratchboard, charcoal/graphite and colored pencil. It is in the realm of pet and wildlife portraits that I am happiest.
The thing I hope to inspire in others is that it is never too late to pursue what makes you happy, and being an artist makes me happy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m passionate about the mountains, and when my best friend from Florida visits, we dive into the best that Colorado has to offer. Estes Park is a highlight with its fun tram ride, quirky shops, and great food. For a ghostly thrill, we explore the Stanley Hotel. In Colorado Springs, we love the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Cave of the Winds, and the stunning Garden of the Gods. Breakfast spots like Syrup and Doug’s Diner are our go-tos. For a weekend adventure, Glenwood Springs is a must with its alpine slide, amusement park, and relaxing hot springs.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many people who have encouraged, loved and inspired me along my journey. My husband and three children are so patient and supportive of my more recent passion for art and starting my art business.
Jamie Zerr-Lockwood has been a great friend and resource, connecting me to an artist community I am not sure I would have found without her guidance.
Two of my favorite books are: The Mountain is You by Brianna Wiest and You are a Badass by Jen Sincero (highly recommend both to help you get out of your own way).
