We had the good fortune of connecting with Skylar Cutter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Skylar, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
The work life balance was something that I struggled with in the beginning. Going from full time van life, getting to fill my days doing whatever my heart desired, to a full time work schedule was definitely an adjustment. Even though Earth & Skye doesn’t really feel like “work” it is a 24/7 commitment, making it hard to be able to separate life from work. I give my whole heart, soul and then some into my business. Although this year I had to remind myself that I also deserve to have a life as just ~Skylar~. Taking time for myself to do things that fill up my own cup is so important and helps me to stay more focused on days I am in my studio. I am the sole person behind E&S, this has been my full time work since 2020 and I have no plans of stopping anytime soon! But the burnout can be real and finding a balance that works for you can make or break you and your business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Earth & Skye was born in 2020 in my tiny house on wheels, Pearl. I started out just cutting and braiding clothes I’d find at the thrift store to fully designing and making my own garments. Now, 99% of the designs I offer are cut and sewn by me. Going from working in my van, to working in my parents’ basement, to having my own studio space was not something that happened overnight. I owe it all to the people who believed in me and those who supported my vision for the future of fashion. By blending different art mediums through custom printed fabrics, I create true wearable art. These past 2 years I’ve run an artist highlight program where I work with fellow creators to make limited edition fabrics featuring their artwork. I’ve worked with painters, digital artists, tiedye-ers, tattoo artists, and even a glass blowing artist. Creating clothing from their artwork is always an honor. Fashion is my passion, but so is helping others realize their artistic gifts and sharing them with the world. So, this past year my family started a business, The Vibe Collective. An art and fashion hub in Portsmouth, New Hampshire where we feature fellow small businesses and artists. These past 4 years of being immersed in art have been nothing short of amazing and I’m excited for what the future holds for both Earth & Skye and The Vibe Collective
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Obviously we’d have to visit The Vibe Collective in downtown Portsmouth. While we’re in town we gotta go to Deadwicks Ethereal Emporium. One of the coolest shops downtown. We could hit up Lexie’s for lunch and then visit everyone’s favorite bartender, Nick, at Cafe Med. Every Wednesday there’s fireworks at Hampton Beach which is a must see. We’d spend the day up at North Beach on the wall, maybe go bridge jumping up in Rye if the tide is high and walk down to see the fireworks at night. Bernie’s Beach Bar is an experience everyone should have at least once.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family. I come from a powerful family of 6. Both my Mom and Dad are entrepreneurs and small business owners and my 3 brothers and I are all successful creators. Being from a very accepting family there was no shortage of encouragement when I started my own buisness. Without the positive support of my family, Earth & Skye would not be what it is today.
