We had the good fortune of connecting with Brynn Bunker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brynn, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose an artistic career path mainly because its always called to me more than a normal work path. Being inspired by life cycles has helped me in my creative endeavors more than I’d ever be able to be inspired by going to college classes or trying to follow a more “normal” path. Being creative is the only way I can live.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Creating art that holds deeper meanings & truths to the reality of life and its cycles has been my most important goal in everything that I do. When I write poetry and create art to go along with it, it’s meant to reflect different points in my life, whether some of my hardest trials, or my most amazing moments. If people read anything I’ve written, I always want for them to take away something meaningful. Whether they can understand my struggles, or relate my writing to their own, as long as what I create can impact people in a positive, healing way, then I will continue to do what I do.
It was never easy to get started, and I’m still getting to the point of discovering exactly how to reach my audience. Most of it is persistence, and some might even be luck. I’ve gone through a lot of self-doubt and worries surrounding my writing taking off, or even being received in a positive light. I’ve been scared to share some things I’ve written before due to their raw, intense nature. I’ve overcome some of these struggles & fears simply by realizing that in order to put yourself out there, to create meaningful art, to reach the right people who might find comfort in what you create, you cannot hold yourself back.
I created my own line of online Zines called Fugly Horse Magazine with the goal of capturing different emotions, energies, and cycles as I published each month. My brand is meant to highlight the ugly moments, the fears, the anger, as well as the most beautiful, magical moments we all experience. The digital art I create mixed with poetry & prose is meant to surround its own theme in each edition of Fugly Horse Magazine. The duality of life is really my main focus on capturing in each part of my writing & art. In the future, I have 2 different series of poetry ready to publish, everything written by me, and all art created by me. A collection of 8 books in total, which I’ve had written and ready to go for 2 years now, and I’m just amping myself up to put them out for the world, since they’re some of the most meaningful, inspiring pieces of work I’ve ever written.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have always been drawn to Boulder, where my grandparents lived. We would visit, and I always wanted to see more of the city. Visiting the Pearl Street mall is a must, since it’s such a cute place to walk around and dive into a dozen different types of stores, all with their own charm. Visiting cute local shops, stepping into a crystal gift store like Old Tibet, and more makes for such a great day of window shopping and spending time with your friend. I would always encourage anyone visiting to go hiking at Boulder Falls, a fairly cute, small hike that takes you to the most wonderful little waterfall. I, of course, would have to shoutout Downtown Castle Rock as a spot to visit if you’re looking for a cute town to walk around and enjoy the ambience, especially around Christmas time. And if food is a concern, then heading into Denver to stop by City O’ City is a must, as their vegan menu is one of the best I’ve ever had, especially the chicken & waffles or the ravioli, which are to die for. A long time Denver favorite, as well, is Steve’s Snapping Dogs, where my grandpa and grandma would often take us when we visited them up in their Denver condo.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout my family for always supporting me, no matter the situation I’m in. And my lovely partner Luis whose music has continued to push & inspire me to keep writing and working for my dreams.
