We had the good fortune of connecting with Candice Kingston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Candice, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
This is the #1 topic clients come to me about. There may be a problem underneath the problem but this is a very common symptom. To be honest, I used to say Balance is Bull*$&! There will never be a 50/50 split of your time between work and home and you are never able to leave your personal life at home, and leave your work life at work, especially now when you are most likely working at home! However, I have eased up on my assessment, knowing that at the end of the day it’s just semantics. We all want more time with our families and fewer feelings of overwhelm, stress, and burnout from work. We all make time for what is most pressing at the moment so how do we become more present in those moments as well so we feel less pulled in a million different directions? Have a very clear idea of your vision for both your career/business and life is the first step to creating more balance in your life. This way, when you are asked to do certain things, it is easy to make a decision based on your values and what your end vision is. Then you can break that down into goals and the strategies it takes to get to the goal and even further into the step by step, day by day actions you need to take each day to get there. Self-awareness is the piece that helps this all work. Checking in with yourself and understanding where your emotions are coming from. What brings you joy? How can you spend more time doing that? Perhaps you have some boundaries that need to be put into place? There are questions to ask to understand what is holding you back from creating a life you love.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I primarily work with small business owners and executives who are trying to find that work/life balance. I am always hesitant to say that because it makes it sound like it is something you actually find! It’s more the idea of creating the life they love and making the balance they want it to be, their time spent in the way they want it to be, instead of always living at the effect of circumstances. I do this through a process that uses Energetic Leadership, similar to Conscious Leadership, raising your awareness, getting to know yourself, and lead yourself first so that you can then lead others. I was fired, more than once, and really suffered through an identity crisis in corporate. I didn’t know what was important to me (besides my family) and what I wanted to do. It was not easy. I worked with coaches, I started coaching, I got more coaching… and finally, I knew I couldn’t be in corporate anymore. It was not an easy process because I had a hard time holding on to old stories of success and what it meant to be a working mom, who was I if I didn’t work in insurance anymore – which wasn’t such a hard thing to let go of after all. Energetic Leadership – which was developed by Bruce D. Schneider – helps you with the self-awareness piece and as a coach, going through the program, I was able to find out more about myself than I ever could have imagined. It was through the self-awareness that I was able to gain confidence and stand in my true power and be myself – taking off all of the figurative masks – without shame or doubt. The courage and strength it took to start a business, and grow it – all came from energetic leadership. The challenges I overcame, the lessons I learned, and who I have become in the process is my advantage in helping others. I have been where they have been. I have had the doubts, the fears, the self-sabotage… and on and on! But I’m on the other side! Of course, I still have those struggles from time to time, but I have the skills, the tools, and strategies to get me un-stuck and now help others to do the same. If you are in a transition or anticipating one (and these days, we all are!) and you feel stuck and unable to make decisions quickly for fear of failure or even success… there is a way out. There is help for you – you are not alone and you don’t have to go through this alone.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We actually run an AirBNB so I get asked this question all of the time – and I’m terrible!! I am such a home-body! But I’ll give it a shot: Spend the day on a lime scooter, bicycle, or just walking and go down the Cherry Creek Bike Path to Confluence park. Grab a coffee at REI and check out the sales (LOL), hang out watching the kayakers, and maybe take a turn yourself! Have lunch at My Brother’s Bar and then head home for a nap (or go do another sport if you’re a little more ambitious). Get cleaned up and go to dinner at Postino on the corner of 2nd and Broadway – in my hood – where you can sit on the patio, sip Rosé and snack on some great food. Head out to Red Rocks early so you can get a good parking spot and seats for the concert – Nathaniel Rateliff and the night sweats! Have a late-night swim in the pool before hitting the sack.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my business besties and fellow Master-Women: Chelli Pumphrey and Melissa Wolaks! Their support and knowledge have helped me build my business over the last 6 years and I could not have done it without them!
