Meet Tyrell Myers | Content Creator, Storyteller & Aspiring Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyrell Myers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyrell, why did you pursue a creative career?
Much of my childhood was influenced by creative worlds, due to family members and those close to me taking interests in creative worlds themselves. Comic books, medieval fantasies and sci-fi worlds were always the go-to when growing up. I found those types of genres to be relatively easy for me to latch onto. Getting older, through my teenage years and into my twenties I started to have a fond appreciation for all things entertainment, very particularly film and all the passion that creatives give, to ensure their creations mean something. Not just to them but to others who may appreciate their work.
Much of what I do today is very centered on the fantasy worlds, like DC Comics. In fact, it was “Christopher Nolan’s: The Dark Knight” that called to me the most. Even at the age of 13-14 I could see the pure affection everyone clearly had making that film which really solidified my own affection for what I have loved as long as I could remember. However, it went beyond comic books and superheroes at that point. I realized I wanted to pursue a career in entertainment, in creativity, no matter what face it took. Whether my storytelling takes the role of a comic character or my own personal and original idea, the ability to create something on a grand scale and to potentially have others around me feel inspiration the way I did and still do, that’s very important to me.
So here I am today as a content creator, aspiring to reach those goals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Creating content was and still kind of is a trial-and-error process. A process I enjoy since I get to find what works and what maybe doesn’t. Starting off, finding my niche was the most difficult. It was simply about finding that one particular video that would take off more than others and what topic that certain video was about. Getting to that point wasn’t so simple though. Whereas a lot if not all of my content today is centered around DC Comics and surrounding comic book brands, I started off making videos about anything in the entertainment world. As much as I love Batman and DC and as knowledgeable as I am in that topic, I wasn’t fully expecting that niche to pop off for me, but it did.
The step that followed was bridging a gap between creating content I enjoy making and content that I need to make for my viewers. These two concepts can work in unison but sometimes you find yourself in situations where there are things you want to make that after uploading, don’t exactly meet the expectations of your viewers or even interest them. That’s always a tough thing to get over since the feeling of hard work isn’t exactly rewarded. However, even though that can be part of the learning process, something I realized was to never shy away from those failures. The only failure in that situation is the smaller view count which won’t always matter if you love what you do. If you’re happy with the product you’ve made and released for all to see, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. There’s bound to be someone out there who will like it just as much as you do.
In the world of comic books and I.P’s that have such expansive lore, there is so much information to learn and to remember from a history that spans so long. In my instance, I’m dealing with over 80 years of stories from DC and consistently trying to find ways to make my stories or ideas different from what we’ve already seen many times before. The good thing about a challenge like that is there is no limit to creativity and possibilities you can make with these characters. Some of the great comics out there find ways to keep you in these fantastical world’s where the impossible is possible, while finding ways to blend in real life and world lessons. Keeping that in mind is how I attempt to craft my own stories to make comic characters appealing to everyone.
Being able to create a career where I talk about the comic book world is not something I take for granted considering it’s so popular today. Seeing as some of the stories that come out of comic books can be so ingenious and the fact that we live in a world where they dominate the film industry, it gives me hope that one day I can use my own stories and ideas to make my own, comic related or not. And with that, my channel gets bigger everyday no matter if it’s by 1 subscriber or 100 subscribers. I like to think my story gets a little bigger with more potential opening up. I would love to look back 5 or 10 years from now and realize that this trial-and-error process, managing content and necessary failures all lead me to a bigger picture.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So people have a better idea of where it is, Hamilton is about 45 minutes to an hour south of Toronto. I’d say at one point we were a “smaller” city but we’ve really grown in size over the past 15-20 years. We have an almost endless number of eateries and bars to go to so our options would never really be limited. Industria would be a great place for a nice oven baked pizza and a glass of Italian wine or the Mule for tacos and tequila. Hutches on the Beach during summer would be a great place to grab a burger or some ice cream during a hot day while walking along Lake Ontario. It was also a filming location of The Handmaid’s Tale as is a lot of Hamilton for many different movies and shows. Hamilton is also home to the Tiger Cats so a CFL game would be a must for a first-time visitor for sure.
Hamilton is separated into Downtown Hamilton and a Hamilton-Mountain because we are literally separated by a small mountain. Living on the mountain side of Hamilton, the mountain brow is a great place to take a walk and look over the rest of the city. During the day you can see across a bustling city and even extend your eye across the lake and see the horizon of Toronto. During the evening the city lights shine, giving you a completely different vibe at how Hamilton looks. Our city was known as the Steel Capital of Canada and both times of day will tell that story.
Sometimes one of my favourite things to do though is to grab a Tim Hortons coffee. I know some places in America have a couple of Tim Hortons shops but here in Canada there’s practically one on every street corner (Hamilton is also home to the very first Tim Hortons as well). It’s nothing fancy or particularly special, but it’s always been something that I can relax with on the couch, have in hand while shopping or going on walks or having at my side when editing videos and working on my craft. It definitely won’t shock you or put you in awe but maybe it’ll relax you like it does me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
No doubt about it, my mother, Anna. She has always had my back when making big and great decisions for myself. This career path I have taken no matter how you put it is a very tough one to get into. No matter what though, my mother has always been there for me and consistently helps and supports me in whatever way she can. She herself is also very innovative, constantly thinking about new ideas and strategies, which has helped me build my way up to where I am today. She’s never doubted me or my path either. Even on days where I feel very defeated or unsure of myself, she’s always there, thinking otherwise and ensuring that bad days move on to good days. Without her support I truly don’t know how I far I would be today.
I also have to shoutout my girlfriend Hannah. She has been at my side, always taking an interest in what I do and continuously cheering me on. She helps in anyway that I need and like my mother, she has never doubted me. She’s a pillar in my success now and for the future. And even on days where I don’t think I’m doing enough, she loves to remind me and say “My past self would love to have the success that I have today”. She keeps me going and encourages me to be better.
There are many other supportive friends and family I could name and I want to thank them for all the support they have given me from the beginning. But both Anna and Hannah have come together with their very similar names and loving nature to create one super support system.
