We had the good fortune of connecting with Malia Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Malia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I come from a family of small family businesses. I think it’s in my nature and DNA.
Prior to becoming a Relationship/S*x Therapist, I was a self-employed as a graphic designer, yoga teacher and trainer, along with owning my own yoga studio. I love all the various aspects of small business – service, marketing, creativity and even the finance/accounting side of things.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m usually the 3rd, 4th or 5th couples therapist couples find. I’m direct, assertive, confrontational, compassionate and passionate. Most couples therapists also are not trained in s*x, s*x education or S*x Therapy. No the path was NOT easy. The master’s program, the cost, the time, the working for free/no pay, the advance training, the paid supervision. It’s a journey to say the least – and I truly love what I do. The challenges are constant in the world we are navigating. The challenges with couples I see have some common themes – aging, hormones, desire discrepancy, long term relationship issues, s*xual pain, communication issues, unhealed trauma affecting relationships, couples NOT slowing down enough to listen, hear their partner and be heard. The business side of therapy is just as challenging with the landscape of insurance vs private pay. Most people want to use their health insurance. Health insurance limits client care, doesn’t reimburse therapists enough (especially couples therapists) and there are major issues with confidentiality. Not everyone can do private pay. The work we do takes significant training, time, and money – the ROI isn’t in alignment most times.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Depends on where that is. I practice in TX and CO. Also totally depends on the friend. If Colorado, I would split it up in Denver for a comedy show, Colorado Springs to hit the Incline and some time in the mountains, preferably on the slopes (Winter Park, Copper or Vail). If Texas, I would hit up Palo Duro Canyon to get in some hiking and also visit the Sad Monkey Mercantile – they have great food, bevies and occasional live music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All the relationships I have ever had, been in and will find myself in, in the future. Relationships are everything in life! Cindy Austin, LPC/Austin Empowered was my mentor while I was in grad school. I was also her personal assistant/marketing manager and she showed me the ropes. Couldn’t have done it with out her. My family – my mom and dad have always been super supportive of my education, dreams and goals, along with my two sisters. And career wise/therapy mentors would have to be Ester Perel, Dr. Tammy Nelson, and Gail Guttman for helping shape who I am today as a Relationship/S*x Therapist.
