We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaw Morris & Kelly Warren and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shaw Morris & Kelly Warren, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
We work really hard to make sure every lesson or event is not just educational, but truly enjoyable. Mahjong can feel intimidating at first, especially with National Mah Jongg League rules—but we break it down in a way that’s approachable, easy to learn, and always fun.

People leave our sessions smiling, feeling accomplished, and excited to come back. Many book another lesson or tell a friend, and that word-of-mouth has helped our business grow naturally and authentically. Along the way, we’ve built a wonderful community and made so many lasting friendships.

We know people come to us because they want to have a good time—and we never lose sight of that.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When we started Mahj Squad, it was a grassroots effort. We relied on our friends, hosted many of the early events ourselves, and just put everything we had into making it work. Pretty quickly, word spread beyond our immediate circle, and we realized we had something special.

As Mahj Squad has expanded, we’ve slowly built a team of amazing women who share our values and truly represent our brand. Everyone on our team is a mom, and the support we have for one another is what makes this all possible. While we’re still working hard, growing the team has allowed us to prioritize things that matter to us personally—like showing up for our kids’ golf or tennis matches.

It’s been a lot of learning, a lot of lifting (we offer table and chair rentals!), but more than anything, it’s been incredibly rewarding.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’re so lucky to be part of the Denver community and to have worked with many of our favorite local spots. Here’s a little itinerary of some of the places we love most:

Coffee:
Lavender Coffee Boutique
Aviano

Shopping:
A Line Boutique
Wish Gifts
The Den
The Lark
Downing Street Needlepoint

Our favorite workout:
CorePower Yoga

Restaurants:
Le Colonial
Le Bilboquet
Cherry Creek Grill

Mendocino Farms

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’d love to give a big shoutout to The Mahjong Line!

Their colorful tiles and beautifully designed accessories were what first drew us into the game, and we’ve loved teaching with them ever since. As a Mahjong Line ambassador, we get access to monthly trainings and fun perks that keep us inspired and connected to a larger community of mahjong lovers.

We’ve played with tiles and accessories from other brands, but The Mahjong Line is hands down the best—both in quality and in creativity. They’ve brought so much joy and style to the game, and we’re proud to represent them.
